Substrate on the kitchen ceiling

when a friend of mine was PCing an oven bag with about 6 jars worth of substrate in it, he apparently tied the bag too tight or something because about 15 minutes into the thing there was a loud pop followed by loud hissing. a portion of the bag had managed to shoot itself out of the hole recently vacated by a rubber plug. not to mention substrate all over the kitchen including the ceiling. he was following hippie's bulk tek but encountered contams the last time when trying the oven method. three questions:
1) what would cause the rubber seal thing to fly off and the bag to shoot out of it? the bag was closed using the little tie that came with it. fairly secure but far from airtight. he was under the impression that if anything the bag would blow inside the cooker and the mess would be contained within.
2) how could one avoid a similair incident and mess in the future?
3) the rubber seal thingy just popped right back into the pressure cooker it seems fairly secure and wont pop in or out without a fair amount of pressure. he has lost the manual in a recent move and is wondering if it is safe to use again. it is a relatively small model found at wal-mart. only holds about 6 regular half pint jars or 4 pint sizes with little head room. just to give an idea of the type.

The rubber seal is designed to blow out under high pressure. What happened is that the bag somehow floated up and blocked the steam escape valve that goes up into the pressure indicator. This way the pressure built up rather than being released through the escape valve. The rubber ring is replacable if it doesn't work. Either that or he just had the burner on too hot. The way to do it is to start off with maximum heat until the steam stops escaping. Then turn it way down till the pressure guage is just rocking gently. I think they recommend inverting a saucer or a small bowl over bags if you do them in a pressure cooker. That way the bag doesn't block the holes.

That did happen to me once but i think it was because i had the heat turned on too high and the pressure cooker ran out of water inside. It was a total mess.

Agreed, either the bag or the substrate(if the bag blew up first) clogged the port (probably has a rocking weight on it). The only other place for steam to go was out the emergency relief(rubber stoppered). I also had something like this happen. A container melted, substrate blocked the hole, steam made a new one. I pushed the stopper back in, cleaned the crap out of all holes, and started over. No problem.

ahh. it all makes sense now. that saucer idea is a good one and he will definately try that one out in the future. thanks for everyones help.

Hehehe... Sorry to chuckle, but I did the same damn thing a few weeks back. Oven bag with peat/verm, same type of blowout. I now have a nice, dark peat/verm blast spot on my kitchen ceiling and a new 22QT. PC.
