Casing problems

I am getting really poor flushes from my pans when casing. Here is what i am doing. Please give insight on what I might be doing wrong or what you would do differently. Hawaiin strain from PF I am using PF Tek to make jars. Verm/Brf. No problems here. I use large aluminum roasting pans, like you would cook a turkey in. I use a 1/2" layer of wet perlite, then a 1/2" layer of verm, then I use a layer of moist sawdust( aspen wood/animal bedding) and straw mixed together. Then i crumble two brf/verm jars 100% colonized. Then a thin moist layer of casing mixture. Casing mixture consists of 50/50 Spahgnum peat moss and verm. Oyster shell and hydrated lime. I cover with saran wrap. Let sit for two to three days or until i see mycillium growth. Then i move the pans to the fruiting chamber. Fruiting chamber stays between 70 and 80 degrees F. And stays between 85 and 90% humidity. I do not have a problem with contamination. After being in the fruiting chamber for about four or five days i will get some small shrooms to form. Maybe 4 or five per pan. I will get about 10 maybe 15 shrooms per pan per flush. This is worse than growing straight from the cakes. The few that do grow are large in size. But i must be doing something wrong. I see pictures posted of pans full. I ve never had a pan with more than 10 growing at once. I had the same results with B+. So i am pretty sure I am doing something wrong. Could I need to cold shock? Any suggestions? Thanks.

Simplify your tek ! I can hardly understand what you are doing... If I understand, you put perlite, verm, sawdust and straw on the bottom of your casing ??? What's the use ? If it's only a bottom layer, then just put the same thing than the top layer. If you want to use straw, you'll have to have it colonised separately first. The "thin layer" should not be too thin ! Why do you put oyster shell as well as hydrated lime ? Again, simplify your tek. Eliminate one of the two. >Let sit for two to three days or until i see mycillium growth. That's not enough ! You should try to have an even colonisation, not only a few areas. Cover (with some of your top layer)the more advanced areas so that you give time to the other areas to be colonised. Your tek is too complex and not logical. Simplify it and you'll have better results. If I misunderstood something, just let me know what.

That's the key of your problem. Shrooms will grow where the mycelium is. If you only have a couple of spots, then, you'll only have a small area where shrooms can grow. And you won't have many shrooms. Look at the pics in the pic forum, and you'll see what to do. Dreamatrix's "GT grow log" is a perfect exemple !

Hey tom... you do realize that Cookiewhore was just replying to the post. That was not the original poster replying to you. Just thought I'd give you the heads up. And by the way nugganooch, that is a pretty complex tek goin on there. I just use Verm on the bottom, Substrate in the middle, and Soil on the top. I like to KISS. (Keep It Simple Stupid). I'm far from an experienced mycologist, but that's my two bits. Hope it helps. -Raven
