Casing Problems
    #849498 - 08/28/02 04:50 PM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Ok, so about 9 days ago I posted about a casing here:

http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=Forum2&Number=829764&Forum=Forum2&Words=primal_future&Match=Username&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=3weeks&Main=829568&Search=true#Post829764

Today, the casing looks like this:

It appears that instead of going up and colonizing the vermiculite, the mycelium went down and colonized what was dry perlite, but now appears to be wet. I?m guessing that the vermiculite dried out and most of the moisture went down to the perlite layer.

Any suggestions on how to deal with this problem? The cultivator has rewet the upper vermiculite layer by heavily misting it. However, he is considering removing the top layer of vermiculite down to the level where the brf cakes were mixed in.

Could this problem be due to the fact that a perlite layer was used instead of straight vermiculite?

the dry perlite on the bottom is the problem. it is prolley drawing moisture out of the mycelium itself. i personally would either mist the top verm to try and recover the casing or just toss it.
