According to Paul Stamet's The Mushroom Cultivator:

Problem:
Mycellium overlays the casing and then "mats", becoming flattened and impervious to water. No primordia form.

Cause:
Improper watering and/or too low humidity in the external environment. Evaporation rate too extreme.

Solution:

Scratch and/or re-case. Maintain 95% humidity at pinning. Reduce evaporation rate. If watering, mist lightly and evenly.

Can anyone add to this? Do I need to leave in dark with no air exchange for a few days for mycellium to colonize the new casing?
