Question about sterilizing
    #603877 -

hello, i just got all the supplies and im just waiting for my syringe to get here, but i have one question, when i am using my pressure cooker should the lid be on tight? or loose? and should the innoulation holes be covered? i was just wondering how the inside of the jars would be sterile if they were closed, thanks Seth

The lid on the pressure-cooker needs to be tight. Yes, cover the holes by using a piece of tinfoil wrapped tightly around the lid of the jar like this:

The jars will sterilize when the substrate heats up in the jars during pressure-cooking

Thanks alot, that helped a ton, one more question though the technique i am planning on using is the one where you make a reseviour of tin foil inside of the jar and then put the vermaculite over the resevoir, should i still put tin foil over the jar too to keep out contaminates from the holes??

Could you please post a link to that tek? I'm curious, and can't quite picture what you intend to do.
Thanx

You're lucky, i didn't understand how to make that seal. Perhaps you could drive to my house and i could show you how to put the tinfoil over the jar, and you could show me how to put the tinfoil in the jar.

The water and steam in the pressure cooker heats the whole jar from the outside, thus the inside also reaches the pressure cooking temperature over time.

Foil under the lid tek

Just skip down to the part that says "Seal the jars"

Yes you still need to tinfoil the jars. The tinfoil over the jars is to keep the substrate from getting soaked during pressure-cooking. The substrate has the right mix of water in it; you don?t want to add more. All contams should be killed during pressure-cooking if done correctly.

im sure that works, but that is a lot of trouble, the layer of verm does its job well i wouldnt mess with putting foil under it too.. just put foil on teh tops of the jars before cooking... that is too much woooork
