A question about pressure cooking Perlite...

What is better for sterilizing Perlite? Do I need to use a vent hole in my jars? Is there a risk of the jars cracking or exploding if i dont allow for some kind of hole or release? Or, is it okay to P.C. jars of perlite, or Verm with the lids on tight (for casing)?

This si two different things you are talking about. Vermiculite is vermic, and perlite is perlite. like pleezr said, perlite is not cooked. Unless you are a mad scientist and your inventing some 'perlite instead of vermiculite in the jar as a protective layer' teqnique.

if you just want to keep things sterile in your growing environment, baking it would proably be the best idea , not sure if that exactly what you are asking...... what are you using the perlite for?

I am using the perlite for humidification, and the vermiculite for casing. I just want things to be as steril as possible,... Is P.C.ing these a bad idea or unnecessary?

I think he wants the perlite and verm to case....kerPlunk : yes, you can sterilize them in jars, but i wouldnt tight the lids.....you can always tight them after you take them out of the PC....i bake perlite in tin-foil pans though....

no, i will be using the perlite on the bottom of my terrarium, and the vermiculite as a top layer for casing,... is sterilization not important at this step?... many people say it is.

Some shroomerites like to case with coarse type vermiculite,(not the fine grade cos it doesnt leave enough spaces between for the casing layer/mycelium to breath) and from what i hear they DO sterilize it by Pressure cooking it...or bake it........

your question was confusing cuz you said you put perlite in jars. dont bother PC the perlite, it is not necassary and is a waste of time. i have had the same perlite in my chamber for a while now, i rinse it ocassionaly. if you are going to use verm as a casing layer then yes it is important to steriliz it. good luck

just bake the perlite every now and then to dry it out so you can rinse it and reuse it- i dont sterlize it *YOU MUST STERLIZE CASING LAYER* *COBWEB SUCKS*

I think you are confused, young grass hopper. Perlite has no nutrition source. The "ugly stuff" isn't going to be living in a bag of dry perlite. You only thing you might have to worry about is bugs, or, rats?

Take a gallon jug and put a small amount of peroxide in it. Fill the rest of the way with water. Pour the water into the bag of perlite and let soak. Drain excess water and you are ready.
