myco bags actin screwy
    #603557 - 04/09/02 05:28 PM (22 years, 9 days ago)

Well my friend has had some progress with his myco bags fruiting. One of them has formed pins!! some are on the sides of the bag, then again some are on the top so hes happy.

The weird thing is, the bag that has progressed to pinning was placed out a week after the first fully colinized bag, and the first one hasnt shown any pinning...Why!? He's seen no signs of contam, and they've been in the same enviroment. Anyone have any idea about why this happened, and what he should do to get the stuborn bag going??

Hes an intresting fact to, My friend tells me that he was getting fed up with how long it was taking, and he thought he screwed up somehow. Then a few days ago the light bulb over the bags went out(its a standard 100 watt bulb, could these be part of the problem?) After a few days, He checked the bags. Bag one, no growth, bag two PINS!! Does anyone think maybe the light is/was the problem, or know if this is just a freak coincidince?

BTW, the strain is Thai KS, the temp is around 74-76, and as i said the light source was a regular 100 watt bulb. He has since moved it to under a 40 watt bulb.

Anyway, if anyone can give some tips or advice, it would be greatly apprciated.

Well, technically your right, they dont need it to sprout. They just nned to to guide their growth, so they dont grow upside down and stuff. I may be wrong though.

I was just wondering if certain lights might have a negative effect on the growing stage.

No, they don't need light when colonizing. If you do give them light, they are psychotropic, so they will start pinning if in the right conditions with light while the substrate is colonizing.

But when you fruit you need light.

But unfortunately I don't know the anser to your question, I'm stumped as well :frown:

It is possible to grow mushrooms without light. The very first batch i ever grew was in a makeshift tupperware terranium with no light. they rarely got any light at all. Th didn't grow quite as fast nor as big but i found the stem to be alot stringier and meatier.

so does anyone know why this one bag hasnt pinned or anything yet? Is this overlay or somehing because i'm not to sure what overlay is, actually i have no idea. I would imagine if it was overly, someone would have said something like that by now.

What should he do to get this bastard of a bag going again?

I have noticed the variability in the mycobag fruition timing even when using the same syringe. I have no explaination other than strain variability within the syringe. The slow bag will eventually pin and the yield is typically higher in the first flush than from earlier fruiting bags.
