Cheap Ebay 400w HPS lights?

I was thinking about purchasing one of these:

It's priced at $140 including shipping for a complete grow system.  I was originally going to purchase a top of the line 600w system for around $380 but I realized with my low budget that would be quite a chunk of change to throw down considering I'll still have to pay electricity when it is running and some other expenses too.  I like the air-cooled design of the more expensive systems, but since winter is coming up I can probably get away with 2 harvests before it's summer and too hot to use it without an air-cooled hood.

Does anybody own this light?  Can you tell me if it was a good purchase?  The price is almost too good to be true, which creates worries.  I'm not trying to use this system forever, just for a year or so.

i've purchased a 400 watt system from them before and it was great at a great price and arrived in 3 days, i'd say go for it.

I'd buy it. It's not a case of being too cheap, it's more that most places charge way too much for lights.

You've may not have considered the downside of E-bay, that is the perpetual 'paper' trail & money trail you will create leading from the light supplier to you. I've heard of a lot of folk who've had problems with E-bay & Paypal over 'drug paraphinalia' & think both E-bay & Paypal reserve the right to turn over all your details to the police should they feel like it.

well you can easily use money orders and don't have to ship things to your home. that particular company has a website, just order it off there instead of e-bay. cheers.

It is not in the interest of either company to have their customers jailed. If you feel the need for tinfoilhat security, have the light sent to a friends house.

I've never heard of HTG supply, but for about $60 more you can get into Sun System's EcoGro line 400W UL Listed system that is comparable to that only it's made by Sun Light Supply which is one of the largest horticultural lighting manufacturers in the US. If you're house burns to the ground because you bought a ballast made in a third world country with little industry oversight or standards you might wish you had spent just a little more for name brand quality stuff. Just a thought.

I understand what you are saying. HTG actually backs up their cheap ballasts with a 3 year warranty and they have many customers. I've spoken with an owner or two of the same light I'm considering and they thought it was an excellent value.
