I'm not talking about danger of shocking your self I'm talking about the possibility of fire or when people leave their ballast components say hanging in the roof of the grow room or laying on the floor where they can be damaged or have wires accidentally disconnected or something like that.
yes wiring is easy but a lot of people do stupid things without realizing that it is not the safest thing to do you always need a ballast box.

In reality you don't need a ballast box. If you are careful and smart you can put the ballasts someplace they will not move and be touched by anything (including you, someone else, water, a animal, etc.)

I have seen guys wire up 10+ ballasts and just put them on a board. Priority #1 is to not have the ballast be able to hit water. Raise the ballast with a shelf or something but they are heavy so maybe some woodblocks work also. The grounding could fail and your ground could be cover in water from a hydro setup leaking and you walk in with the 1000W ballasts on the grounding failed and then your dead.

A ballast box which is grounded, elevated and secured is your safest bet. Also be warned that murphy's law is a pretty big deal. If something can go wrong don't worry it will. Be prepared for the worst thing to happen and then it can never happen. Don't properly ground your ballast, go ahead and put it on the floor of your hydroponic setup and wind up dead. Do it right or pay the price.
