hps (mogul) light bases?
    #587534 - 03/23/02 06:00 PM (22 years, 1 month ago)

i was looking for hps bulbs today and came across a bunch but the trick is they dont fit into regular light sockets. they have specific bases they need to be screwed into (mogul) and search as i did, i couldnt find any bases or fixtures for hps bulbs except in securty lamps with bulbs already in them. so my question is, does anyone know of any chain/retail stores that sell the bases or do i have to take my search to a specialist??? peace.

home depot should have hps ballasts, mogul base and the standard base size.

Yeah home depot should have the components, they have a variety of ballasts mainly for outdoor applications, HPS require a different ballast and mogul switch then household lights do, they are rather expensive too, a good bet would be to do a search on ebay they have alot of stuff

Those lights are meant for outdoor lighting normally.

Some people have been known to use outdoor HPS lights (like the yellow security lights placed on the outside of houses/sheds/barns etc) indoors. The biggest problem with these is that the hot ballast *often* sits right above the bulb and cant be seperated (unless your a good "reverse-engineer) thus greatly heating up a room. Also they usally have no reflectors and the photo sensor has to be taped or painted. They can be used indoors if one can find a means of getting the heat difused. Also many hardware and department stores sell these, in fact there easy to find. If only one or two small HPS lights (say 70 watters) are used with florecent shop lights the spectrum of sunlight can be fairly replicated without driving the heat up too much in a small room with ventilation. (but ya cant tan with it)
