HPS or MH and where?
    #3336011 - 11/09/04 06:11 AM (12 years, 29 days ago)

I'm looking for some light for mye cfacti and Salvia Divinorum. But I don't
know what kind of light I'm looking for. HPS or MH? 250w or 400w.
I need one that require 220 volt power supply.

And I'm looking for a webshop in Europe, nearest Norway as possible.

Could someone please help me out?
Thanks!

YSr

I have personaly had much better prices and selection going to local light supply stores.. HPS and MH are very comman.. And 400w's have much more lumens than 250(more than double)..

It still doesnt stop me from using my 250 hps but thats all I can handle atm.

I would go with an MH over HPS for cacti and salvia. HPS is more for flowering plants. Most, but not all, ballasts are multi tap. When you open em and wire em right you can run 120-220-420 ect.

Dont use an MH or HPS for salvia!!!!!!!
cant stress that enough. youll kill them, there a shade plant, all they need is a couple floro tubes. and they will be quite happy.

if you really want you could put them under a shade cloth under the hps or mh, but that would be a waste of money. floro tubes are great for salvia and there cheap

so you think mh is better than hps? not really. ideally you'd want a mh & hps for veg & flower respectivly but if one was to buy only one light hps is defentaly the way to go. you can get hortilux bulbs for hps systems that have enhanced blue spectrum as well. any "real" botanist would tell you you sig is non-sense.

He was asking for a light to grow cacti and salvia. And cactus suck under floros unless its just for winter storage dont expect much. Even still, your better off with the MH and just pull the light away for more canpoy area and less w/2ft. MH are more in the color spectrum for veg growth then floros and floros pretty much suck, but they still work great for rooting and some veg. Also floros cramp up your growroom with bulbs rather then having ovehead big builbs.

MH is better for veg hands down, more usable light in the veg spectrum. Ive been told by many of the gurus at OG that while mixes of MH and HPS makes denser buds or somewhat healther looking plants in flower because of teh added blue..... but you cant beat straight HPS g/w for flower. Even the altered spectrum HPS arent significantly if at all superior yield wise. Even if i was using multiple lighting i would still go woth straight HPS because you cant have even hps/hp light distrobution unles you have a moving light system.

I think that sig is putting down the $160-300 "systems" when you can pick up a 400w HPS for free or mad cheap at an industrial electric supples store. Its not putting down HPS, just commercialized systems.

that's taking a shot at hps in general "we do however use high pressure sodium in the parking lot" the ones you use in the parking lot are the cheap ones you're talking about. either way it's ignorance. and i bought a $160 system so what? i'd rather spend a bit more and not have to fuck with building a ghetto hood or buying one for as much as a system cost in the first place. i always did stuff the cheap way in the past and you always end up having to fix your ghetto rig all the time and a million other problems and safety hazards, all of which i can't afford atm. plus it's just retarted to be a cheapass with something that when done right will get you 10x's (lowlow figure) you money back in a couple months. and the point of dual lighting is one veg room one flower room or just swap the ballasts out if you're doing only one room not burn both at once.

sorry to derail the thread so much

Done right you can make a sweet converted HPS for cheap. It just takes the right materials and you can make a superior setup, http://www.erowid.org/plants/henbane/henbane.shtml

heh bet you were reading that henbane thread hun

i know i could have prolly built one for half that but i don't have time to mess with shit not to mention having absolutly no tools that would makeing one much easier. 400w for 160 is pretty good for me and i could afford it so yeah.

But could I use a HPS with a bulb with blue light? Or should I buy a real MH
lamp?

Does cacti prefer MH or HPS?

what is your motive?

HPS is great for growing herb. Botany doesn't consist of just growing a flowering weed, i'm sure you know this. Alot of huge corporate and scientific indoor grows use horticulture grade metal halides, simply because it is the best for imitating sunlight. you're showing your opinion along with your ass.

there's no need to fuck up this guys thread, make a new one if you want to keep addressing me.

hps is good for flowering in general. i can't think of any commercial op's that would be growing non-flowering plants with indoor lighting. hps is better for veg than mh is for flowering, so if you only get one it's best to go with hps. mh also burn hotter than hps.

have you look at the plant sensitivity curve for photosynthesis before? if you had you'd realize the peak is far into the red spectrum (@675nm), even further than hps' s peak at ~594nm depending on lamp, mh peaks at 590nm but drops sharply after that while hps is more gradual and spikes up a little more at ~625nm then gradually down to ~680nm where is flattens out. mh also has a realitvly high peak at ~510nm (green light) which is completly useless to plants = wasted energy.

Quote:

Sunlight has a continual spectrum, radiating energy that contribute less to photosynthesis and are therefore wasted. for this reason many lamps are more efficent than sunlight for plants.

the thread title says hps or mh right? is that not what is being discussed?

you're not doing a very good job then.

bottom line, MH is best for cacti - the original intended purpse of this thread.

debatable, but anyway why get a light thats good for cacti when you can get a light that will work just fine for cacti then during growing season you can grow some skunk buds indoors? i do get side-tracked with arguing too much though. there's not going to be a big (or even noticable) diffrence growing cacti under a hps or mh during the winter :stoned:
