metal halide and high pressure sodium light question

I found these hps and mh bulbs ranging from 70-175 watts. AFOAF would like to use them to grow weed but when he screws them into a normal light socket, they don't light up. Does he need a ballistic or somethink like that. Why won't it turn on. They're brand new? They're a little bit bigger than an incondesent bulb and fit into the same size outlet. thanks

they run off 220, you gotta re-wire your fuse box = fire hazard if you don't know what yer doing, never seen any that would screw into a normal socket though that's weird, never saw them below 400w either so that's probably why :stoned:

He's going to need a ballast..I wouldn't try to light up an HID bulb in an incandescent socket!!! (I didn't even think they would fit..?)

You need a ballast to run that HID lamp.....

jeez, plugging a HPS into a normal light socket is not a good idea! Lucky nothing bad happened, I'm running a 400w HPS for the first time today and I can't look in my grow room for too long otherwise my eyes get destroyed.
