as stated above use t-8 or t-5 not LED's , also instead of asking if a t8 is a regular shop light use the search feature on your computer, i know you just want to get everything right but you are going to have to do some searching on your own just like we all did.
google
if you CANT find the answer you are looking for then ask but search first instead of asking questions that can be easily found.
also t-5 t-8 fixtures are not very heavy
good luck

They make ballasts that are compatible with both bulbs.
I own a 400w ballast that is like this. All I do is change the bulb when I change from vegetative growth to flowering.
Only extra investment is the bulb, no new wiring or anything.

unless your growing for money (which it doesnt sound like you are) go for MH. i always find plants under MH more..... full somehow. i usually have used panda film in the past, but have also used mylar emergency blankets. use whatevs. i mean, what, you might possibly maybe get a 2 percent increase in yield off of sally? what is that, like an extra leaf? sounds like you have the right head on your shoulders for this, good luck! legit is the way to grow!

i do tend to use full spectrum hps bulbs, and work a lot better then those sylvania bulbs you get at home depot aka less stretch. the ballasts where you can switch between mh and hps i hear will burn out you bulb and ballast a lot quicker and the lumens will be diminished oh, and i forgot to tell you a few things. its worse to get the cheapy emergency blankets (the thin ones that they sell you inside most emergency kits, really small, fits in your pocket type shit) because when you unfold them, therell be creases all over that you wont be able to straighten out and you'll have light being reflected every which way (which will kind of defeat the purpose of it). you have to use those tarp like blankets, they cost like 7 bucks each or something. i guess it is better to use panda film imo. sorry, forgot about all that.

one more rant ~~~> in my use with the all mighty panda.... if your going to be using a staple gun to put it up, i found its a good idea to duct tape both sides of the film at the edges because if you dont, the staples tend to rip through the film before the end of a couple of months.... very frustrating, esp. when your rooms full of plants. what i do is get like 2 - 5 feet of tape (depending on how daring i feel) and use half of the tape (long wise) to cover an edge, then, fold over to cover the other side, and to this all along the edges that ill be stapling, then take a sip of good beer, and begin initiate stapling sequence.

im glad i said "i hear" lol it never fails that someone on the shroomery is ready to pounce on ya for anything. but just when i lived in the bay, i was considering getting these, and some guy at my fav hydro store told me, and after that, i went to 4 others asking the same question and they all told me the same thing. and i was just looking through old messages cause i thought magash may have said something to this extent, but i think im just trippin. ill send em a pm. but no, no refs. and im a bit busy to go searchin the net right now, i have a swing dance lesson in an hour : )

I just got a digital ballast about a month ago. I like it a lot better than my old magnetic one. Just getting rid of the buzz was a major improvement. I stepped up from a 400w magnetic to a switchable 600w digital and its quite an improvement. I need sunglasses now if I have to work under the lamp. It's a LumaTek ballast I think, it's purple and made by Hydrofarm.
