Multiple Lights = One biggy?
    #2876347 - 07/10/04 06:44 PM (13 years, 11 months ago)

I just posted but this has nothing to do with the last topic. I just saw a grow guide on Erowid that says instead of buying a 400 Watt light bulb you can just get 10 40 Watts... can this be done with good results? :mushroom2:

you should have around 40-50 W per square feet. You should also have a light with full color spectrum ie hps.

10 40W of what kind of light? Incandescents are useless. Flouros would work but 1 400W HPS would have better canopy penetration and it would put off less heat. The flouros wouldn't put out the heat in as concentrated an area but they are less efficient so they would actually put off more heat.

The 1 400W HPS would use less energy than the 10 40W flouros.

a watt is a watt as far as energy consumption the difference is in how much light they put out. 1 400 W HPS would use the same amount of energy as 10 40 watt flouros, the difference would be in the ammount of lumens they put out. 1 400w HPS would put out more lumens than 10 40W flouros...

at least that's the impression I've always been under.

yea floros woudl probably use more then one HPS. as they loose energy when the energy goes through the ballast. and as someone said it will give off more heat(i dunno) but this means lose of energy.

So about those lumens.... Anyone know the actually physics of light and lumens? Does it add up by adding another light source? Or is there some formulae that has to be figured out to do it right? If anyone actually knows for sure how they work, just lay it on me, i've figured out harder stuff before. Thanks guys.

ask at www.overgrow.com you are sure to get a good answer there.

with ten 40w bulbs, you just don't get the same intensity as a single 400w bulb.

If you are going to go flouro I'd suggest you mount them vertically around your plants. And one above the plant of course. This allows light to reach the entire plant. Thats really the only way flouros could be worth it.
