monotub and coolmist

I am considering going with a mono-tub. I was wondering if I could achieve better results, and full automation, by only making the four lower holes near the substrate, and piping a cool mist humidifier into the top. I am hoping this would provide better FAE than standard mono-tubs while maintaining proper RH. I'm sure this has been done before but I haven't seen it. Would this provide more optimal conditions than standard mono-tubs? I have seen posts where people said you should still fan tubs. I am new to this so any advice is good.

I had an ultra sonic come on 2 times a day for a min. It filled up the tub with enough visible vapor that the tubs started to leak out the mist (which was actually good because it would get out the CO2)
In the end I now have a larger tub and it works fine for me

Just out of curiousity, why go through the effort of full automation for anything other than massive bulk grows? It seems like a lot of effort and time that isn't really necessary.
Not trying to be an asshole or anything, I've just always wondered.

You should probably grow at least once with a regular monotub before adding electronic junk to it...

You dont need electronics to be fully "automated" with a monotub. Thats (in my opinion) the whole reason you go that route. Monotubs when built correctly, take care of themselves.

The reason I am considering this is that I have heard that mono tubs don't actually have optimal FAE alone without fanning. Is this true? I know they work as is, but if I can get considerably better results from cutting a few holes and taping some hoses, its worth it to me. Mycocat, I intend to use more than one tub. I was thinking of running a cool mist 24/7 if it didn't raise rh too high. Does anyone have any more comments from experience?

I don't see why you are talking about automation with a monotub. That is the whole point about a monotub. It is already automated. Just case it and forget it man. Don't worry about all of that crap. Yeah you could put a humidifier on it but what is the point. You don't need 100% humidity in a mono-tub. I believe you only need 85-92% or something like that. A humidifier would be overkill.
Just do a normal monotub and you will have excellent results. Trust me. For some proof here are some pics of 10lbs of tennstud in a monotub. This will show you the power of the monotub.

and another...

Don't try to mess with the monotub it works perfect the way it is, and if you are worried about optimal FAE then go with a doubletub. That extra distance between the holes really helps.

I have a 45 gallon sterilite tub I will be using later today as a mono tub. Does anyone have a suggestion as to how many and what diameter holes should be made? Since it is a big tub I was thinking maybe 12 holes rather than 8. Suggestions please?

You need to be carefull with those holes because that can make a big difference. I would still go with 8 just make them a little bit bigger. If you put too many holes you get too much FAE and the humidity in your tub will be low. I had that problem with my first tub. I didn't get very good results and all of the caps on my little shroomies were cracked. I haven't done a tub that big so I really don't have a suggestion for you.

They suck. Mono-tub or no mono tub. PMP is 1,000X better.
Take it from me, tryed it some years back and it was the worst investment I made

I say "Go for it"
Get yourself a second hand cool mist , a buck or so worth of PVC , and hook that sucker up . Run 2 lines from the cool mist to the top of your tub , put 2 holes opposite these near the top of the sub layer for CO2 escape and let it run .Do like a lot of peeps using mono tubs are now and forgo a casing layer and let that tub stay near 100% humidity after colonization . It's basically a big cake now , treat it like one . All the FAE you can get is good in my book .

do like hippiechick said, but run the coolmist 1hourON/3HoursOFF, otherwise you might get a little soggy. if you still get droplets forming, just make holes (covered with micropore tape) until it come down to where you need it.( water drops on the walls, but not the sub) it works.
