Question about 1/2 pint jars and innoculation

After making the substrate the jar is pretty much filled and then leaving the top 1/2 inch with dry vermucilite. While innoculation along the side of the glass my needle pushes into the substrate. Would it be wiser to get full pint sized jars to decrease the chance of contamination or am I ok? Thanks for your responses.

Erm...the needle is SUPPOSED to push into the substrate. You don't have to "slide the needle along the glass to prevent contamination". As long as you sterilize the needle (flame or alcohol) before innoc, you should be fine. Jar size means nothing.

the smaller the jars the easier they are to sterlize with heat. the smaller the jars the less time it takes to colonize. less time for them to get contams. 1/2 pints i think are the best for beginners, and always will be. they have stood the test of time. or maybe i am just getting too old. best of luck dabeerlover

When you put the needle down through the verm layer it creates a little tunnel. Though I've never seen it mentioned anywhere, as I finish each hole, I give it a little shake from side to side to cave in the tunnel just after withdrawing the needle. I've done tests on 4oz, 8oz and 16oz jars. While pint(16oz) jars are great for finch seed, they suck for PF cakes. Half pints(8oz) are ideal, 4oz work, but not substaintially faster than half pints, and I think you loose a little substraite mass because of the verm layers. But maybe not. Just my 2cc's. Hope that helps.
