Strange thing just happened...

I've had a pf jar that I started around... 3 months ago, that was just now getting to about 90 percent colonization. It had a spot about the size of a dime left to go, so i took it out and was just going to cut the dime sized chunk out, so I take it out of the jar, cut the spot off, and when i start crumbling the cake, i reach a dark brownish/purplish spot and i instantly thought 'aw shit, contam!' I took a whiff and it smelled like mushroom, so I started crumbling that bit just a little more, and guess what i found, right in the goddamn middle of the cake? A little cap that was dropping spores! Anyways, I wasn't sure if it was a mushroom cap, since i've never ever heard of mushrooms growing invitro in the MIDDLE of the cake, so I threw the mushroom away, cut the spot with all the spores out, and it's now in a sort of improvised fruiting chamber on my balcony. (rh outside is around 90)

I gave it a quick dip in a h202/h20 bath and it fizzed a little bit, rinsed it, then stuck it outside.

If anything happens with it, I'll be sure to let y'all know.


Has anyone ever had this happen? crumble a really old cake to find a mushroom inside?

Haha I've sure never heard of that happening before, but if it did happen I'd be quite amazed

How big was the mushroom? And how big was your jar?

was a half pint jar, and the cap was just about half an inch across... i know i should have taken pictures, but when I'm doing sterile work, i hate to go grab my camera and re-sterlize the room... i promise i'll bring my camera into the still room BEFORE i sterlize next time :P

But yeah, strangest thing i've seen so far. and a big ole splotch of spores too!

that's some funny shit. Definately keep the camera close when doin stuff like that. I look forward to birthday pics of my own very very soon..( of course this is a joke, who actually grows mushrooms, jeesh)
