How much better are studio monitors?

I'm looking into possibly purchasing some studio monitors.. seeing as how I listen to so much music it only makes sense. Get the best sound.
Right now I have Klipsch Promedia 2.1 speakers. Got them like 5 years ago, but they are still great. After having them for 4 years, they still really impressed me with their quality when I used them for a trip sessions. Speakers 10 ft apart with woofer in the middle, on the floor. Excellent.
But anyways Im going on here... shit
I was looking at these monitors: M-Audio Studiophile LX4 2.1
Anyone else have any good suggestions when it comes to monitors?

A studio monitor isn't really a "good sound speaker", its an accurate speaker. Most speakers you buy commercially intensify certain aspects of the sound coming through them to make them "pleasing" if you will. Perhaps increased bass, perhaps increased mids, or some intensely researched set of frequencies that people find pleasing.
So studio monitors are NOT what you want if you just listen to music. Studio monitors are for people who produce and need to hear exactly what it is they are making BEFORE they start mastering it. They need to hear what the MUSIC sounds like, not what their speakers sound like.

M-Audio Studiophile LX4 2.1 is a great choice. I have the m-audio studiophile bx5 which are now discontinued. I also got sbx subwoofer which is recommended if youre going to have studio monitors. My monitors are connected to my sub and act as satilites to they dont trip on the same frequencies. i do produce music and listen to regular music cds which sound amazing especially with the sub. not to mention, if you watch movies on your comp, youll hear the little minute sound details and will enhance the movies and have a better appreciation for sound design. good investment but may find cheaper comp speakers if all you want to do is listen to muzak.

I bought a pair of Event TR6's, and I have to admit: when I'm at my computer I'm in aural heaven.
listening, making, mixing... it's all gorgeous.
Here's my old thread about em.

Theres nothing wrong with buying stuidio monitors for listining pleasures. I havent come across any computer speakers that sound good. So If your a music lover then its worth the investment.
A good pair of monitors will definitely make the difference! I have a pair of KRK RP 8's and I love them. They arn't the best monitors but they sound excelent. I honestly stayed in my room listining to music non-stop for a week when I first got them.
But I dont just use mine for listining to music I also use them for mixing. I might get back into producing when I can come across xtra cash though.

yeah, fred is right on this one.
Once a song is finished, every single engineer will play it through the shittiest sound system they can find... usually their car, with busted speakers....
but why? because a large percentage of people have shitty sound systems, and if you can still hear every instrument and the vocals on busted ass speakers, it is a good mix.
The best studio monitors are ones with the flatest frequency response... unlike Electro-voice which is really high pitched, or JBL's which are really mid rangy.

I sat down at the music store with the same music on KRK's and Event's. It really came down to personal preference, but they're both really good monitors. And relatively similar in price.

Good points. I also make music myself so it is also for that.

i'd say go with the KRK's also. ive got a pair of KRK 8's and they're great. they blow my old speakers away completely, and i use them for listening as well as producing. excellent for both
