I want to try poppy tea but im scared !

Ive found myself some lovely fat fresh pods.
I have a rough idea how to make them into a tea, but im reading stuff on poppys.org saying how easy it is to OD on this.

How safe are these pods if used sensibly ?
I want to try but i want to take the piece of mind into it with me that im safe.

Anybody have any advice ?

They are pretty safe in my experience. As long as you don't grind up and brew a ridiculous amount of pods, you will be ok.

I wouldn't brew any more than 10 medium sized into one tea. That's the maximum that I use, don't try that many the first time!

I was thinking about trying 3 or 4 at first just to be safe.

I think that many should be ok for a first attempt.

Definatly post back here when you've tried it, i also want to try poppy tea but was scared of an OD ( read poppys.org too) .

I ended up trying 3 pods. It didn't taste as bad as i thought it would, i actually quite enjoyed it.

Now i feel mellow and contented, only mild effects but still nice and a welcome relief from the hangover ive been carrying all day.

No nausea at all !
Something definitely worth trying again, i think i'll stick an extra pod or two in next time though.


Now i'm going to go and chiiill !

Are you capable of identfying if its placebo or not? Ill be acquiring pods shortly and theyre small/mediums...ill report my experience asap. Ill be using 3-5 for testing and possibly up it to 8-10 since the 8-10 range is recommended for full effects by most people i've asked. Is it true some people have to use 20+ pods to feel aything? BTW Would tramadol build up tolerance to poppy tea?

I thought you were supposed to harvest the pods when the crowns were pointing upwards \|/  :confused: More opium content in the pods or something???

Yeah Muppet69, ive lived with my placebo for years through trying things.
It can be pretty strong sometimes but they weren't placebo effects last night.
Just a mild opiate high, i have no tolerance to opiates at all and these are about the best plants Ive ever seen.
I'm guessing that if your tolerant to an opiate already there will be a cross tolerance.

Hey Amatoxin.
When the crowns point up it means the seeds are about ready, I'm unsure about alkaloid content.
These pods look about right to be lanced so I'd say there's plenty in them.

I found these on public land , I'm unsure how much longer they're going to be there,
so Ive had to make the most of them while i can. I'm wondering how to get the lil buggers dry now.

It takes about 2 weeks to air dry them spread out on a blanket with air blown over them with a table-top fan according to the guy that took these pics... long enough for them to develop mold  :frown:

What about making puddy out of them? That stuff stores for years from what I've heard.

SWIM would let them dry with desiccant for about a day, long enough to prevent fresh O from seeping out, then slice the crowns off, opening up the seed capsule. seeds dumped, now a hole is open to allow more surface area + inside the pod to dry.

Puddys one idea, i think i'd prefer to dry the pods though :smile:.

I think i'll halve the ones i have, scoop out the seeds then try and dry them that way.
Like Organic says try and get as much surface area as possible.
They should dry in all this warm weather we've been having.

Did you manage to save yours or are they lost to garden development ?

They were lost to garden development unfortunately but I've been doing some gorilla hunting recently and should be able to harvest roughly 500 or so pods soon  :smile:

I'm going to go the puddy route though. Freeze fresh pods to break down the cell walls, simmer with a squeeze of lemon for 15 minutes (they say it's far better than steeping @ poppies.org), and then reduce to puddy at 60C to avoid breaking down further alkaloids.

Hopefully will work out ok fingers crossed!  :smile:

Ive been reading and it looks like the alkaloid content drops as it matures to seeding.
The way to tell if your picking them too early is to cut the pod, if the latex runs down the pod it's too early to pick.

All i want to know now is how much does rain affect alkaloid content.
Is it ok to go out and pick right after its been raining for afew hours, if the pods are at the right maturity ?

Hmmm, the reading that I've been doing at both poppies.org and club opium suggests the opposite...

Rain does apparently effect potency, I hope it's not by too much as there's been some pretty heavy thunder storms tonight...  :frown: Your just up the road from me, did you get any???

Yep, it's been dry for weeks.
Now all of a sudden it's chucking it down.

I'm still unsure about the time = potency thing.
As long as they work i'm happy,, :cool:

I think the weather is suppost to be the same tomorrow,, :mad:.
