poppies containing opium
    #2729334 - 05/25/04 09:12 PM (12 years, 6 months ago)

Are there more than 1 kind of poppie that contains opium? I have some poppies growing in my backyard and I was wondering if they could possibly have opium inside. Is there a way i can tell?

The other poppies contain similiar isoquinoline alkaloids like berberine and protopine in varying concentrations depending on speices. These alkaloids are considered Opium alkaloids but do not produce the characteristic euphoric affects of morphine and codiene (to a lesser extent thebaine and papaverine). They are considered "narcotic" because they possess the pharmacological capabilities of depressing the central nervous system however they are rather toxic and shouldn't be experimented with. Several other plants that are not related contain these alkaloids too like Dutchmans Breeches (wild bleeding hearts) and Corydalis(corydalis also includes other more interesting alkaloids too).

I dated a girl who's father had a very nice garden. He told me that the previous year he grew some poppies (orientialis the wal-mart ones) he said that he got minor effects but was dissapointed.

the flower in the picture definately isn't an O pop. but are you going by that one pic only (it only shows the flower with no shot of the leaves or stem)? the flowers can look very similar to an untrained eye....what do the leaves look like? i would reccomend researching the leaves of orientials and somniforums and applying that to your backyard poppies. you could very well have some o pops but most likely they aren't...unless johny poppyseed paid a visit your way.

peace

The picture in the link could be confused with opium poppy, they should have included leaves/stems and seed heads of the P.orientalis. Compare their P.orientalis pic to P.somniferum (single red with deep purple base, Tasmanian). Needless to say, look at the seed heads if in doubt.
