identification help
    #5795693 - 06/27/06 12:07 PM (17 years, 7 months ago)

Mushrooms do not normally grow in my yard but this year we put a lot of topsoil down and it has rained a lot and maintained high humidity for a few days now and i discovered these all over my backyard, not planning on doing anything with them but i would like to know what they are.

Habitat: grass, found them on very new grass sprouting from the earth.

Gills: The gill color is tan/light brown, the cap appears to be transparent and the coloring comes from the gills

Stem: White and hollow, fragile, slightly enlarged at base, also slightly opalescent.

Cap: Brown at the top then much lighter brown outside of the tip
Spore print color: brown/rust

Bruising: No bruising.

anything anyone can tell me would be greatly appreciated.

thanks alot,

Dan

Location: northern nj.

A rusty brown spore print plus their appearance and habit says those are almost certainly Conocybes. I won't even guess species since you need a microscope to accurately identify any Conocybe.

Some species of Conocybe have high levels of amatoxins, the stuff that makes the deadly Amanita species deadly, so these mushrooms should be treated as if they are deadly poison.

DRTMaverick, they do somewhat resemble Mycenas, but Mycenas have white spore prints (just a tip to help you get better at identifying). Also, most Mycena species grow from wood or woody debris, not in lawns.

Happy mushrooming!
