Overheard in a grocery store

I was at the grocery store earlier, and the woman in front of me was buying some cough syrup and cold medication, OTC stuff. The cashier had to card her, per state law, and explained to the woman that Sorry I have to card you. Kids are turning this stuff into drugs.
The other woman seemed satisfied with the explaination. I've had friends that had to be convinced that caffeine was a drug. I tell you, the state of education is very grim in the general public.
Which could be a good thing. I was just amused and surprised at the same time.

For that one fraction of a second, you were open to options you'd never considered. That's the exploration that awaits you...not mapping stars and studying nebulae... but charting the unknowable possibilities of existence. To carry yourself forward and experience myriad things is delusion. That myriad things come forth and experience themselves is awakening. -Dogen Zenji

As someone old enough to remember being able to walk into a 7/11 and buy a pack of cigarettes when I was 14, I have to say, that I am increasingly disgusted by all of these rules, and regulations, and information-inquiries, and searches at the airport, and all the rest of these bureaucratic razor-knives in this "death of a thousand cuts" being subjected our privacy and our civil-liberties all in the name of "our own safety" and "the children"...
I realize that this is a natural consequence of over-population, increasing technology, and continued governmental legislation for the sake of legislation, but understanding it, doesn't mean I have to like it...

Drug control, gun control, speed limits, all complete bullshit, for the most part. Those that are smart enough to understand we need regulation, don't need regulation, and those stupid enough that they'd be a danger to others don't follow the rules. Lets clear up some of these laws and let the weak just sort of sort themselves out.

Robotussin has DXM in it. Some people cook it down into a more concentrated form. Need I mention what OTC makes meth?
So what about the education?

Is meth dangerous to make? I could have sworn that I heard somewhere that there are "dangerous fumes" produced during its manufacture...but then somebody was telling me about some dumbass that used to cook up meth in his own house for himself and his buddies.

Methlabs only blow up when meth heads make the meth. If someone with actual scientific experience makes it, they can do it in a relatively safe way. It only gets dangerous when people just leave lids off shit and cut corners with shitty containers and the fumes just waft through the place, lookin' for a spark.

this country is going down the shitter- and i'm getting out of here before you need a national ID card to make all purchases, log all your travels (toll booths, etc), etc etc
i've had enough of this crap. mussolini defined facism as the perfect merger between Corporatism and the State.
when i take a look at the USA, that is exactly what i see. a perfect union between the corporate interests (big oil, big tobacco and basically the 6 or 7 companies that own everything media related) and the state (senate, house and executive branch)

caffeine is a great drug, right up there in popularity with alcohol
thanks for a good example of the lack of education of the general public.

People complaining that they can't function without three cups of coffee should be qualified as abuse.

where i live any cold/cough meds you buy have to be purchased at the drug store counter. Last time i got sick i had enough strength/willpower to make a quick trip out to get some meds. Figured i could walk in, grab some otc sudafed and nyquil, and check out. I walked to the medicine aisle to see all the cold meds replaced by these plastic "tickets" with pictures of the meds on it. I had to walk back to the pharm counter, wait in a huge ass line, and then had my ID taken and recorded, just to get two fucking boxes of cold medicine.
It's a pitiful state of affairs really, it's just the same thing over and over again. Cut off the drug stores, they'll import the precursors from somewhere else or find some new method to get them.
Three cheers for the war on drugs

Yeah, that's what I meant...people turning drugs into drugs, right. Except when they come from the bottle, they're not drugs yet. Or something. People are strange.

The quote, I believe, is "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." and it's far from certain Franklin ever wrote or said it.
