Ok Honesty.. Who here really hated the Grateful Dead? 2

Though their message of non-violent peace was OK, i found their music to be very boring, and lackluster. Most people who were going to shows were there for the party in the parking lot to get drugs.
I think Jerry Garcie was one of the most over-rated talents ever to grace the earth, and the man couldn't sing well either..
Also i found it funny, he is tagged a genius, when he didn't write a majority of the songs. And please don't give me he was good on the guitar, because i have been playing for many years, and he was mediocre at best..
This illusion has to stop people.. The band wasn't that great, and i am sure i am not the only one who feels this way.. Time to fess up people, who here could careless about the Grateful dead...

Well I'm definitely not a fan. Some of their music is alright (such as Touch of Grey) but for the most part I could care less about them.

I actually like some of their tunes. They can be very catchy, but I agree, they are a tad over-rated.

A tad is a understatement by leaps and bounds..

It's surely a matter of taste.
I love Grateful Dead up until the mid seventies, post Blues for Allah I couldn't give a flying one. Personally I hate Touch of Grey, but that's just me.
To deny Garcia his place in the history of great guitarists seems shortsighted in my opnion, but everyone has their own tastes.
This isn't the first time a thread of this nature has come up on the board and I always wonder what the motivation for it is.
If you don't like a band fine, but why bash them? Why not rave about a band you do like?

"paid for by nabisco chocolate cake mix"
i don't think the dead had a message of non-violent peace, really - they were quite wary of making any political statements, beyond creating a community based on very different paradigms. and certainly, a lot of people went to dead shows (and now to phil shows, sts9, whatever) to score work. fuck em, if the love didn't overwhelm them, well it just wasn't meant to be. as for saying jerry wasn't an amazing guitarist - listen to jerry garcia acoustic band, or garcia & grissman - that was most his "style", and he did it better than most i've heard.
frankly, musical opinion is that - opinion - and a bit pointless to be argued.

The Dead is a fine group, but they also transcended being simply just a rock band, and became a social emblem for some people, a symbol, which is exactly why this thread was created, at this time, in this forum...
It's a rather simplistic and obvious attempt at baiting...
Regardless, change is coming to the Pub...

I agree. Violent peace is just confusing as hell for both the heads and the straights.

Yeah, he was probably just charismatic as hell.
I'm not even a big fan of the Dead myself but I think it's fairly simple. If you don't like them, don't listen.
