Ok Honesty.. Who here really hated the Grateful Dead? 2

Though their message of non-violent peace was OK, i found their music to be very boring, and lackluster. Most people who were going to shows were there for the party in the parking lot to get drugs.
I think Jerry Garcie was one of the most over-rated talents ever to grace the earth, and the man couldn't sing well either..
Also i found it funny, he is tagged a genius, when he didn't write a majority of the songs. And please don't give me he was good on the guitar, because i have been playing for many years, and he was mediocre at best..
This illusion has to stop people.. The band wasn't that great, and i am sure i am not the only one who feels this way.. Time to fess up people, who here could careless about the Grateful dead...

Well I'm definitely not a fan. Some of their music is alright (such as Touch of Grey) but for the most part I could care less about them.

I actually like some of their tunes. They can be very catchy, but I agree, they are a tad over-rated.

It's surely a matter of taste.
I love Grateful Dead up until the mid seventies, post Blues for Allah I couldn't give a flying one. Personally I hate Touch of Grey, but that's just me.
To deny Garcia his place in the history of great guitarists seems shortsighted in my opnion, but everyone has their own tastes.
This isn't the first time a thread of this nature has come up on the board and I always wonder what the motivation for it is.
If you don't like a band fine, but why bash them? Why not rave about a band you do like?

"paid for by nabisco chocolate cake mix"
i don't think the dead had a message of non-violent peace, really - they were quite wary of making any political statements, beyond creating a community based on very different paradigms. and certainly, a lot of people went to dead shows (and now to phil shows, sts9, whatever) to score work. fuck em, if the love didn't overwhelm them, well it just wasn't meant to be. as for saying jerry wasn't an amazing guitarist - listen to jerry garcia acoustic band, or garcia & grissman - that was most his "style", and he did it better than most i've heard.
frankly, musical opinion is that - opinion - and a bit pointless to be argued.

The Dead is a fine group, but they also transcended being simply just a rock band, and became a social emblem for some people, a symbol, which is exactly why this thread was created, at this time, in this forum...
It's a rather simplistic and obvious attempt at baiting...
Regardless, change is coming to the Pub...

I agree. Violent peace is just confusing as hell for both the heads and the straights.

Yeah, he was probably just charismatic as hell.
I'm not even a big fan of the Dead myself but I think it's fairly simple. If you don't like them, don't listen.

It also really helps if you've been to a few shows. They were rare and special things. Great people and good times!
However, it should also be remembered that some people can't appreciate positive fun in a nice social environment with good people. They're just not wired for it. The human race is a diverse group...

It is about the shows and mind enhancement, enjoying yourself and others. I wouldn't expect negative individuals to enjoy it.
Plus you have to go to a show to really understand it.

garcia was a better guitar player than you. believe me. the guy could thrash. i used to hate them and then gave em a chance, now im obsessed. its a music unlike anything else, which is why they created fans unlike any others in music.
more importantly, nobody gives a flying fuck that you dont dig the dead. why is it that every so often some guy feels the need to make a thread exactly like this. NO ONE FUCKING CARES!! music taste is sooo god damn subjective and the dead are loved by enough people you should come to the counclusion they obviously had something you dont get. i dont like TOOL but i do recognize their talent. your thoughts are un-original, take your shit to OTD...

I find that between 1970 and 1980 the dead did some of their best work, and to be honest, they have a decent amount of songs that rock my socks off. Listening to Mississippi Half-Step right now, anyone who says this song sucks, doesn't really know what music is.
If you don't dig the dead, please go back to your acid-eletronica-jazzical-techno-babble-shit, take some E, and die. Thank you very much.

I love the fact that when someone makes a thread bashing some shitty emo or pop band, people jump right in.
When someone criticizes the Grateful Dead, it's suddenly not right?

Let me spell it out for you. It's the Pub. 90% of the people like the Grateful Dead. I don't go into the music and art forum, and say that Tool, or Shpongle.. is a crappy band, even though they're not my favorite. Because people like them, and I can recognize talent when I hear it. And it would be pretty pretentious and arrogant of me to go into a forum and bash a band that most of the people there adore. And what's this.. the 500th grateful dead sucks thread in the pub history? People only do it to get a rise out of people. The troll factor. Otherwise they would just keep their opinions to themselves, and not listen to them.

You must have some severe reading comprehension problems, because the threadmaker didn't ever say the GD sucked. In fact, he was not even offensive in his language. I think perhaps you should not be assuming the motive for him making this thread. Even better, if every GD fan didn't get butthurt and have to show their undying loyalty on a web board, this thread would have died quickly. I like the GD as well, but I'm not going to get my panties in a bunch about it like a good portion of the posters in this thread.

Actually, I was reading at a college level in the 5th grade. But that's neither here nor there. If the point of a bulletin board is free speech, and if he can come and say how 'lackluster and un-great' the GD is, then people have every right to say that they think he's wrong. I don't know his motives, but one can only assume that in a forum frequented by Dead lovers, for one to dedicate a thread to how the dead is mediocre at best, is a jab. Granted, he didn't use any offensive slang .. but it's not hard to read between the lines. Anyway I don't feel like arguing semantics and personal opinions. That could go on forever.

Oh, on another note, Garcia couldn't sing his way out of a 6th grade chorus concert...he's fucking HORRIBLE. I cringe when I listen to some of their songs. The only reason people like them is because they fell in love in a drug-deluded haze and somewhere in the back of their mind still love them. But how could anyone actually think that shit sounds good. The singing I mean. I do like to listen to some of their live jam shit with just the instruments, that's great to chill.

It doesn't take fifth-grade reading level to look at the timing of the thread, the context of the situation, and the member/sock's history, and know what he's up to; even if he does think he's being clever in skirting the issue by crafting his post in a certain fashion. The intent is obvious...
This isn't that Brady Bunch episode, where Greg makes a Faustian pact with his dad to life by "exact words," amusing hi-jinx ensure, and valuable life-lessons are learned. I'm not stuck on exact words for my thoughts and actions. I'm scanning for patterns and intent...
At times, I'm going to make judgment-calls and act on them. You may feel they're right or wrong, but that doesn't change the fact that these actions are still going to happen from time to time...

So just because a lot of people here like a band, that makes the band untouchable to criticism? If anything, that seems like an even better reason to civilly criticize them. I don't understand why we all need to be in agreement of opinion on whether or not a band is spectacular. If someone has an opinion, they should be encouraged to share it, as long as they do it under the contraints of the rules. When someone makes a thread about how awesome the GD is, I don't get all up-in-arms and say they are baiting the 10% of people who don't like them here.

nature vs nutre might come into play oon this one me thinks as for me i was raised with the dead. i can remember hearing certin dead songs befor i could even talk, let alone understand the lyrics. for the first 8 or so years of my life dead way all i was exposed to. no 3 min late 80's radio songs, no shity pop, no nothing exept for the good old live grateful dead i think that reay influensed my ideas on music, playing it and listening to it. if you have 2 min to listen to a song then you have 50 min to listen to a song

they're not the best at what they do, they're the only ones that do what they do.
jerry wrote the majority of the music to the songs, while robert hunter wrote the majority of the words. they worked as a team.
and if you don't like em, quit whining about it, just don't listen to em.

OK after asking around, i know you haven't been here for about a year, so i am going to clear something up right now.. Many people, including Ythan have seen countless pictures of me.. But hey thats a good try to realy support to your ideas .. And now that you have officially derailed my thread, i guess i can address you..
But in all given respect, and peace I am going answer the things you said about me by quoting Bono from a concert i saw in London England in 1995, in front of a crowed of 200,000.. This was said right before he sang Sunday Bloody Sunday..
" This is not a rebel song, but a song of freedom. This but a small cry, a song to call for peace against an oppression that follows us like a sickness in the night. This is but a song to carry those scared and beaten to find the light of hope. Stand up my brothers and sisters, for those who stand silent will be those who die.. There can be unity among the masses if we sing loud, and sing strong. Terror, and fear are among us, beating us into submisson, but it has only one voice.. We shall come together standing, and our song will show the governments that oppression will never be seen as nothing more then a few mens evil actions.. Freedom today is not a dream, but can be a reality to those who are willing to SING OUT LOUD! For this is our time, and we shall raise Strong, and in peace, and love".. Sunday Bloody Sunday
OK now can we please get back to the topic this was meant to be.. No more derailing please.. If you want to talk about me use the correct forum called OTD. Thanks..

for the same reason there are a TON of pro-dead posts post your fav dead show .. i miss the grateful dead... whats your fav dead song ( these are all found with a simple search on "dead", and didn't go past page 2)
as you put it so eloquently No ONE FUCKING CARES .....................that you like/miss the dead, or what your fav dead song is.
you feel you have the right ( which you do ) to post pro-dead, but beware those who dont care for the band, sit in the corner and keep your mouth shut..you dont have the right to express your likes and dislikes, only those who do like em gets that privilege
and ya know Ive tried SOOOOO hard to like the band especially when me and ripple was buddies ( well i hope we still are, just dont stay in touch anymore ) I MISS YOU RIP!!!!, and i respect the bands following, but there music is just so bland, guess i need a lil more balls to my music
I am not one to go around bashing music, as i like just about everything except rap... lol and i take my share of criticism about my musical choice(s)
lol /me hangs his head and admits he is a KISS fan from wayyyy back and defend them just as much as the deadheads do the dead.. but i dont post tons of topics on i miss ace, or whats your fav kiss song.
it gets old when your not a deadhead to CONTINUALLY have them force fed to you..
BTW could i have a KISS post stickied too?

Bravo..
Ok here it is.. Those of you who so magnanimously wrote that i am trying to troll people, you are so far off the mark..
No i personally don't like the band's music what so ever, and the beliefs i stated, are those i have always had, and may always have.. If you read what i wrote, i even said i respected them for the peace they brought, and the people who followed them.. I just don't like the music, nor did i find Jerry Garcie to be a great guitar player.. You want to debate that, fine, make a thread about guitar players, and I'll name off Carlos Santana. and Steve Vai, and explain why i feel this way..
I wanted to find out who else didn't like their music.. No evil understatements, no other ideas behind it other then what i stated..
And i am very happy people are defending the Grateful Dead. I would do the same for a band i followed with the passion allot of you seem to have for them.. I haven't said" Oh you people are dumb hippies, and the dead sucks.. Nor would i ever when it comes to music, and what people like.. No i said i didn't like their music, and who else is like me on this..
Speak up people, and let your voice be heard.. If you feel i am wrong, then by all means i'll listen, and respect the hell out of what you are saying.. But i feel like i feel, and you feel what you feel..
Now i hope this clears it all up, and those who want to put their spin on it, can read that this is a debate of personal tastes, and opinions... If you love the dead, and thier music then by all means support your band... But give me the same respect to tell you why i don't..

Papaver said: It also really helps if you've been to a few shows. They were rare and special things. Great people and good times!
Hehe, I was avoiding this thread 'cause it just looked like a negative bashing. But on the flipside, it got me thinkin' about the Dead again, and now here I am after a twenty minute jam session to some cuts off Shakedown Street - feelin' better than I've felt all day
Though I wasn't fortunate enough to catch Garcia in the flesh - I have been to a handful of Dead shows since, as well as shows featuring other members of the band with their own ensemble. For those who may want a peak into what one of my most memorable experiences was like --> [click here]
Also as many others have indicated - the music of the Dead is often an acquired taste. I grew up with sisters that were a decade and then some older than me, who had the chance to go to a couple of the shows, and were sportin' all sorts of music that the members of my generation typically shy away from or are simply ignorant of. At that time, I heard the Dead.. and I wasn't impressed. Even later years when I heard it on my own time I still found it to be a little jumbled and "hokey" for lack of a better term. I can't even tell you when my perception changed, but it surely did a 180 and now the musical stylings of the Grateful Dead are some of my favorite, for any mood, time, or place. Something about it tells a story to me, and maybe a different one each time, but it strikes a deep chord within and never fails to bring a smile to my face.

It doesn't add up to me.
What doesn't add up? It should be obvious there are a considerable lot of Dead lovers 'round these parts. Can't say the same for the emo crowd. Demographics my man! Where those census keepers when you need 'em?
My conclusion: Too many people here like to argue. Let's debate instead
PS. I'll give it to ya that Garcia didn't have a great voice - but did Dylan? It's the whole that is important in this case, not the quirky intricities of the individual. I for one find it refreshing that someone who doesn't fit the traditional mold could have attained such a following
PPS. Santana rocks
PPPS. Steve Vai is OK, but I find his music too technical and "dry" - though a greatly subjective description this I understand, it just doesn't carry with it the underlying emotional feelings that manifest from other music I enjoy. I will concede however, that Vai's "Sisters" is a fucking awesome track!

And as far as the emo kiddies go, that's a whole other topic I for one definitely don't want to get started on at the moment.

Bravo, and thank you...
All this was ever meant to be was a thread where people who don't like the dead can come in, and voice what they feel.. I am not downing any fans, because i will admit i went to maybe 20 to 30 shows over the years.. I have friends who are still card carrying lot kids, and who are some of the nicest people on earth.. I totally agree their message, and the vibe around the show was maybe the best thing ever.. It's just the music it's self.. But hey if you love the dead, then by all means that is cool, and i will never knock any fans.
OK that's pretty low hitting Dylan.. Mr Tambourine man was not a great singer either i must say, and i never claimed to like him. .
Carlos Santana will always be my favorite of that era..
Steve Vai: Passion and Warfare.. nuff said..
But i will not take back what i said.. I feel the dead was like going to a great party in the beginning, and seeing friends who you only see at that time. It had a miserable middle when they played, but kicked back up in the lot after.. My opinions only..

garcia may have not had a great voice by conventional standards...but it was perfect for the music he played. ive heard his songs covered by people with much "better" voices and it just doesnt sound right. give me garcia's cracking voice, forgetting lyrics anyday over someone with a "good" american idol type voice.

I don't understand how you can describe the dead like that? I know its what you think but I feel the opposite about most of the things that you said, but I really love the dead, they hold a very special place in my heart and life.
So count me out :P

I'll reccomend to you what got me started on the dead. Never liked their studio stuff. Then, song by song I started listening to the album "Birth of the Dead" - the live songs. It's like 14 songs, all live obviously, from their real early days. It's nothing less than incredible, I assure you. Try it out if you want. Listening to that on acid yesterday made my brain

Anyone ever wonder why you keep seeing threads about how the shroomery sucks now? Threads like this one don't help. So you don't like the dead? neither do I but SO WHAT? What? do you want a prize or something? Go ask your mother what you're supposed to do when you don't have anything nice to say.
And really, what's the end game here? is this what it takes for you to feel like a man? Shitting on other peoples joy?
I don't see you writing music that millions of people enjoy or starting a movement that spans decades and touches lives in a possitive way. untill you do, maybe you could keep your shitty opinions to yourself.

I love the fact that when someone makes a thread bashing some shitty emo or pop band, people jump right in.
When someone criticizes the Grateful Dead, it's suddenly not right?
