Coir casing

I just cased 2 quarts of fully colonized rye grain (Gulf Coasts from Ryche) and cased with 2" of coir on bottom, and 1/2" of coir on top. I will keep this thread going as I progess. I think I am getting a digital camera from one of my buddies soon, so I may be moving this post to the pictures forum.

You will love the Coco Coir!!!!

Why did you put 2" of Coco Coir on the bottom ?

I just use a top casing layer of Coco Coir.

not sure why, I have always but a bottom casing layer. I guess that is the tek i read first and it has been working for me, so i never really thought differently. Do you think a bottom layer is unnecessary? Will a bottom layer promote bacteria, or rotting?

you got it back-asswards. only use like 1/2" on bottom and use about 1.5" or so on the top. more on the top will feed more water to your fruits and on teh bottom it will just run thru it like it normally does but not gather any nutrients for doing so; wasted effort. small layer on teh bottom can wick up excess moisture but 2" is just excessive.
