how thick is too think for casing layer

my auntie just cased a bunch of jars the other day. it seems that she put a pretty thick layer of vermiculite and coco fiber on them.
is there any positives or negatives to a thicker than normal layer?

The casing layer is directly effected by the depth of the substrate.

If you put a really thick layer on, with a pretty thin substrate, it will just take a while to colonize, and could POSSIBLY be a little detrimental to your mushrooms because some of the nutrients will be used in just the vegetative growth.

However, it might be good in the end as it will be able to handle bigger shrooms. :smile:

Im sure it will be fine, it just will need a little extra time for colonizing, however your using coco coir and the mycelium can really go through it fast.!

it seems like its taking just a couple days longer but the white is starting to pop through mostly on the coco and some on the verm. i'll get some pics and try to post the casings in a few different stages.
