Casing 101(pictorial) 4

Students open your mycology minds and read the following excerpt from your text: __________________________________________________ Casing 101 The following method is very simple and can be used to transform a colonised PF style jar into a casing. We used a 1/2 pint jar and a coir/verm/lime casing layer. Using two 1/2 pint jars will produce better results. Supplies: Fully colonised PF style jar (at least 1/2 pint) Plastic sandwich bag Foil baking tray Fork Pre-sterilised casing mix Vermiculite Spray bottle A little ingenuity Remember to practice sterility at all points in this procedure. Step one: Remove lid and band from jar. Place plastic bag over jar opening and hold tight. Turn your jar upside down and spank it. The objective is to loosen the cake from the jar. As soon as the cake loosens it should plop into the plastic bag. After the cake is in the bag, remove the jar from the bag opening. Be sure to close the sandwich bag as you are removing the jar. Step 2: Insert a fork into the bag through the bag opening. You will use the fork to break the cake up into manageable sizes. Be careful in this step. Sharp objects such as forks can cause injury (as Azurepower found out while taking this shot:)). You will want to split the cake up 4-5 times into cross-sections if you can. Step 3 Once the cake is in smaller sections it is time to have some fun:). While keeping the bag closed break up the cake from the outside of the bag. Try to break the cake into pieces the size of Whopper candies. Once the pieces are all broken up they should look similar to this: Step 4: Wipe the inside and outside of the aluminum baking tray with alcohol. Place a layer of dry vermiculite in the bottom of the tray to 1/2 inch deep. Spray water onto the vermiculite until wet. A mixture of water/peroxide can be used also (5-10% peroxide by volume is what I think most cultivators use). Step 5 Pour the broken substrate directly onto the vermiculite layer. Try to spread it as you pour. Make sure to spread the substrate evenly across the bottom of the pan. Step 6: Now pour your pre-sterilised casing mix over the substrate layer. As a general rule I believe a 1:4 ratio of casing to substrate depth is used. After pouring your casing layer to the desired depth, lightly pat down and smooth out the casing layer (some people do leave the casing layer with a rough surface, that is fine also). The final product!!! I would like to thank Azurepower for his help in making this a pictorial tek. __Copyrighted February 2002, Joshua and Azurepower__ Keep in mind that this is a general outline of one procedure to produce a casing. I encourage modifications and use of ingenuity to improve this procedure. Joshua

Damn I wish you would've posted this last night before I used bare hands to break my cakes apart. I used the method I read in another tek but I can see how much more sterile your way would be Thanks for the info for newbies like myself.

not to bash you or anything but the baggie is totally pointless the mycellium isnt gonna get contammed as long its fully colonized, you can get mold on the verm layer, but not the mycellium, USE YOUR HANDS DAMNIT ARE YOU SCARED OF GETTING EM DIRTY...

Nice job guys. Thanks for the time and effort. About the baggie LSD, either way will work; but why take the chance that you have some bacteria on your hands that could be a potential problem. I think its not about getting your hands dirty, its more better safe than sorry. Joshua, thanks for all the information you have provided me over the past few months. You have helped me mare than you know. Peace, Bob

> the baggie is totally pointless the mycellium isnt gonna get contammed as long its fully colonized Really... you are sure about this statement? I have seen both cobweb and trich growing happily on my friends fully colonized cakes.

I had thought that you are "supposed" to let the broken mycelia recover in the baggie for 24 hours or so BEFORE casing so that it will be stronger and have a faster start. Opinions?

Dude lets the mycelium recolonize the chunks in the pan (about 24 hrs or less) before he adds the casing layer. He sometimes uses bags, sometimes doesn't. Good job Joshua and Azurepower!

I just throw on disposable latex gloves when doing work. It never hurts. I also like cutting my cakes into cucumber slices. I usually just cut a 1/2 pint cake in half anf lay them on the bottom of the tray. Its all good though. Nice tutorial.

Nomez, You should incubate your newly created casing for a few days, until the mycelium has re-established itself before putting into the terrarium. I dont know, I havent had any problems wiht just dousing my hands with alcohol and then cutting them up and placing them in, but, im sure the baggie would be just a nice extra step...couldnt hurt in using one.

Which way do you break open a soft boiled egg? From the top or the bottom? Which way does the toilet paper go? Over the top or from underneath? To touch the cakes or not to touch? Do whatever you fuckin want...lol Nice post gentlemen...

LSD i promise i m not trying to be a smartass, but look at your shrooms and flushes then go to the mushroom pic forum here at the Shroomery and look at all of Joshuas pics and then you tell me why Joshua maybe does things the way he does. Hes got about a years experience and is one hell of a cultivator and teacher if you ask me. Lets face facts without people like Joshua, Anno,Workman, and Ryche here the rest of us couldnt grow a fuckin daisy let alone mushrooms.

". Lets face facts without people like Joshua, Anno, Workman, and Ryche here the rest of us couldnt grow a fuckin daisy let alone mushrooms. " Exactly!!!! Although.....I wash my hands really well....then break up my cakes too...lolz But the added step of using a baggie is a good thing...just incase you have some "dog shit" under your finger nail.....or if you forgot to wash after wiping your ass.....lmfaoooooo

I know you werent and my post was less directed at you then it was the subject matter. It just seems a waste of valuable energy to debate such a small issue when there are good arguments for both sides. It comes down to either you do or you dont. Simple really. "got any LSD_4me?"
