bad idea.
prosecute the crime, not the motive.
does anyone think that having stiffer sentences for "hate crimes" is a good idea?
if so, why?

Agreed, prosecute the crime, not the motive; exactly. One day, certain words will be outlawed when uttered by certain minorities, namely white people. At least one man has already been put in jail for calling a black man who attacked his wife a nigger. Since when was calling someone a name a crime? Since now.I see a grave future filled with this kind of bullshit. Time to move to Norway.
In Germany, symbols and hand gestures are outlawed! I can not help but think that as nations bind together economically, laws will one day conform across borders and silly laws like that will pervade our, suposably free existance.

And btw, it's mainly organized jewish/zionist groups pushing the hate crime legislation. The ADL JDL and other jewish groups are activly pushing this legislation. The negro groups aren't really pushing this stuff although they're minorities. I hope the US supreme court strikes down these laws because they are the end of free speech in America...

I've got news for you. All violent crimes are hate crimes. They are not love crimes. If I love you I will not rape you. If I love you I will not rob you. If I love you I will not call you names. If I love you I will not beat you. If I love you I will not ambush you in an alley, rape you, and then strangle you with your own pantyhose. All these things are done because the assailent has hate in their heart. All those things are hate crimes. And the same goes for lynching you if you're a negro. If I lynch you I do not love you.
A crime is a crime. The motive is always hate, greed, or lust., or a combination of those things...

The issue Innvertigo is bringing up is that the minority or protected class can not commit a so called hate crime. When members of the black street gang the crips kill any white person as their gang initiation it is not a hate crime even though it was racially motivated. If there was a white gang which required the killing of a negro as initiation it would be on the 6 o'clock news every night for months, but when a negro gang did it it was quietly mentioned in passing.
And another incident I remember was in Jasper texas, if I recall. A white ex-con dragged a black ex-con to his death from the back of his pickup truck. This man had met the black ex-con while he was in prison and the black ex-con was in prison for several rape charges. He offered his old prison acquaintance a ride. He killed the black ex-con by dragging him to death. The media turned the slain serial rapist negroe in to a martyr and showed us the developments in this hate crime every night for several months. A statue was even erected to memorialize the dead serial rapist. A couple months later a group of indians dragged a white family man to death behind their pickup truck. It was a racially motivated crime as well. The media barely mentioned it and they never mentioned the developments of the case, ever.
When minorities commit racially motivated crimes it's because they are poor oppressed downtrodden folks. When a white does it is a rare occurance and it broadcast nationwide for months. It is common for negroes to rape a white woman. But if a white rapes a negroe it is rare and as such it is a hate crime.
It is a double standard to have a protected class at all. And it is an even greater double standard to punish those not of the protected class more harshly for what is a less severe crime when committed by a member of the protected class. Do you not se the hypocracy?

ya, like mathew shepherd. see, maybe it might have been good in the 1950's or something to show that there was no tolerance for crimes against minorities that might have gone on before. mathew shepherd. the gay dude that got tied to a fence and beaten to death. it's a freaking terrible crime whether he was gay or straight and if you make that a hate crime it almost seems to trivialize it. and what if they hadn't even known he was gay? they'd still make it a hate crime.
so, yeah- it's bad news for all the reasons mentioned above.

Anyone happen to catch the miniscule article about a related incident in Texas?
A white drifter was hitchiking and was trying to get a ride, three black people picked him up and offered to give him a ride if he put in for gas money. Once at their destination the drifter tried to weasle out of the money for gas and tried to run. What was the reaction of the black trio? They ran him down with the car and killed him.
What are you asking yourself right now? I'm betting its along the lines of "Gee, why haven't I heard this? this must be made up or something".

Now reverse the races, what would you have?

I like GWBjr's stance on the Jasper incident. I believe the quote was along the lines of "The two men who committed that horrible crime are on death row. What other punishment would be fitting?"
Sounds like prosecuting the crime to me.

If someone is going to break the law and commit the crime in the first place, then adding another law to the same act is obviously not going to do any good.
