Do bloodshot eyes do any damage?

Just wondering, 'cause my eyes always go incredibly red and feel like the ache a bit whenever I get stoned. Can this have any adverse effects on the health of my eyes or my vision in the long term? I heard this normally goes away for 'frequent' marijuana users, but I rarely smoke more than once a week, so I guess it will never go away for me.
I know that this is a common effect of marijuana, but I haven't found anywhere that mentions any implications of this effect. Any ideas?
----
Anyways, completely unrelated... I ate 0.2 grams of Hawaiian mushrooms last night. I didn't trip (I didn't expect or want to trip) but I had this lovely relaxing weighted feeling all through my body. I just lay down on my bed and watched The Simpsons, it was pretty awesome, like a week of relaxation condensed into a single night. I love that relaxing effect of mushrooms, and I've found you don't even need to trip to get it. Anyone else use mushrooms in low-doses for their relaxing body effects rather than just in high-doses for tripping?
My first two experiences with mushrooms were also like this. It was kind of like a learning experience for me; as though the mushrooms taught me how to relax, because I find it naturally difficult to relax (too many videogames from a young age, heheh).

yes it is bad for your eyes, blood shot eyes just think about it...cann't be a good thing.
i don't think it is neccaryly mj that causes bloodshot eyes thow...but could be for example maybe thc causes it.
anyways its the smoke that does it...when you smoke try holding your head in a way that no smoke can rise and come in contain with your eyes as easy....i bet this will help some.

in your lungs you have little sacs called avoila<--spelled wrong sorry. when you breath in dust, and lots of other stuff clog up your lungs. to clean this stuff out you have villi(push stuff up and out windpipe) and also you have- i believe they are called macrophages...these guys go around basicly eating all the bad stuff in your lungs and air sags, cleaning.
when you smoke you are putting so much dirt in your lungs that macrophages become overwhelmed. When you hold your smoke in this has to be extremely bad. Not only would the smoke(and dirt in it) start to settle but you are also starving your body of oxygen and these little macrophages that help clean(resulting in there death).
so now you have fewer macrophages to clean, the ones left have a hell of a cleaning job to do (when this happens, parts don't get cleaned, which results in emphozema)...overall your body is way behind on things because now you cann't obsorb as much oxygen.
so then your body has to breath more often to get same amount or even less o2. This takes more energy, takes more energy than your taking in purhaps..therefor your body slowly decays...which is why smokers are said to age quicker.
hope this helps explain things....why not just make some brownies and avoid all the mess?

yeah, i know how good it feels to hold in the smoke a little longer, but it's far worse for your lungs and it doesn't make you any more stoned...

yeah and if you only smoke like once a week or two weeks, all it will take is 2 or 3 drags(blowing it out as fast as you can) to get you blown out your mind anyways.

Hmmm... Well I never did blow the smoke out very quickly... I remember reading a report in which scientests found that inhaling for 5 seconds, holding for 10 seconds and waiting for 45 seconds (between hits) was the most efficient way to smoke. I don't usually go quite that far, but I do hold it in for a few seconds.
I usually use a bong, I don't know if that helps with the crap when smoking, but don't get me wrong, I much prefer to eat it. I will probably only eat it shortly and stop smoking altogether anyways.

I always casper my smoke. Holding it in with 5 hits is probably around the same harm to your lungs as not holding it with twice that many. So why waist your ganj to get the same high?

it is not the smoke that does it.
When you eat marijuana you still get blood shot, heavy eyes.

i think i already explained this, but for those that are slow
"Not only would the smoke(and dirt in it) start to settle but you are also starving your body of oxygen and these little macrophages that help clean(resulting in there death). "
holding your breath starves your body of o2 for short periods of time.
doing this for 3-10 hits w/e is your cup of tea...will result in brain damage as well, your brain gets noticable damage after like 3 mins of no o2.
20-30 seconds of no 02, multiple times....will result in brain damage.not noticable at first...but over long periods of time it is....hence people you call "burned out" <--this is all opinions on my part....but it does make sense...to me at least.

Man this is BS - "Of course having your eyes bloodshot is bad for them, just think about"...just think about what? How does that make sense?
MJ relieves intraoccular pressure, hence it's usefulness in treating glaucoma. So that is one way in which MJ is good for the eyes. There's no evidence anywhere that anyone has suffered eye damage directly from smoking weed, unless someone cares to prove me wrong. I wouldn't worry about it.

after reading my previous post i came to the conclusion that someone might be able to say hey swimmers hold there breath.
1. how many people do you know that swim everyday? 2. holding your breath is very different than holding in smoke.
smoke has co2 which is what your body trys to get ride of when exhaling...so when smoking instead of co2 out and o2 in, you have co2 out and co2 in...which isn't sopposed to happen...so then co2 is going back to your cells instead of o2.
cells cann't do anything with his co2...so they starve for o2.

xurzax said: As I understand it, one of the cannaboids in marijuana causes the capillaries (tiny veins) in your eyes to expand, causing the redding of the eyes.
I believe this is why it can be used to treat glaucoma, as larger capillaries would mean more blood flow.
This is why other methods of ingestion still cause bloodshot eyes.
Yes I agree. It's just due to an increase in blood flow to your eyes. So no, there should not be any long term effect from bloog shot eyes. Just buy some visine.

But you don't casper like that...
You let little bits out at a time, and then inhale fresh air with the new space. After about 25-30 seconds its all gone. I never gasp for air at the end.
I see your point, as you would be getting less oxygen, but true stoners hold their weed in tell its all gone, and I know a lot of smart stoners (stoner = dumb is typical stereotype). I know parents who said they use to smoke everyday for like 5-6 years in their college days, and they show now signs of brain damage

oh and also, what about divers (just for an example). They train to hold their breath for minutes at time--they do this for years along with training to get good at it. With your logic, they would be either dead, or a vegetable
