a few questions on bulk...

afoaf has been growing the past few years, cakes, casings and such, but now wishes to get a little bulk tek going. the situation:

-she has access to an autoclave
-she has several fully colonized BRF jars
-she has several perlite-humidified tupperware containers

now, with all the different bulk teks out there, she was wondering what some of you veterans might suggest. dung, straw, autoclave bags and so on are not out of the question, but would make things considerably more difficult.

My friend has always had very good success with just wheat straw. Now adding other ingredients will produce better results, but using just wheat straw works good.
Get a very large pot
Fill a clean pillow case up with chopped(use scissors and cut 1inch sections) wheat straw, and add 1 cup of hydrolized lime((keeps the ph from becoming to acidic causeing germs to take over easier)). Shake up good
Put full pillow case in pot and put a weight on top of P.case
to hold it down.
Fill pot with water until covering p.case.
Put lid on
bring almost to a boil and let it pasturize for an hour.
Take pasturized straw in pillowcase and put on wire rack over sink to dran and cool
then put a small layer of dry vermiculite in bottom of growing container.
Next put a 1 inch layer of straw
Then a layer of broken up pieces of mycelia cake
Then another layer of straw
And so on... until the last layer you make is straw.
Now put aluminum foil over the container and put in 80 degree( a little cooler tan normal because the straw will generate alot of heat) dark place.
Wait until mycelia breaks through and covers about 70% surface.
Then add a vermiculite/peatMoss Casing.( add lime to the peatmoss((lowers ph)) and either bake for an hour and a half or pressure cook, autoclave for an hour)*let Cool*
Put casing layer on at 1 1/2 inch layer thickness.
Add some light and keep it moist and at 70 degrees.
There ya go.
Now some perks:
Wheat straw****carbohydrate source
!Cottonseed meal!***Adds linoleic acid that increases yeilds
! ZOODOO or plain Manure!***Nitrogen source
! pinch of Gypsum!*** provides Ca++ ions, essential to mushroom growth.
!pinch of super Phosphate!*** Promotes vigorous mycelia growth.

Try this. Add four cups of zoodoo to your wheat straw in the pillow case, then pasturize it. The straw will soak up alot of the nitrogen and it already contains carbohydrates, so you have a good round supply of growth formula.:)bluhoney

Sounds like you`re making Lasagne with all those layers Blu...lol.....  That would be some kick ass stuff to serve at dinner....  How bout a HOT pic with some nice shrooms laying about your hot body ?... :smile:......  Missed ya

Missed all of you to, college is extremely hard this semester. Taking some tough courses. LOL< yep looks like making some type of pasta dish doesnt it.:) But it works really well. I modified an old compost tek and through trial and error was able to come up with a few extra ingredients that make normal bulk straw recipies a little better.:)bluhoney. Oh P.S. I'm working on some new pics;)
