a question about casings??
    #427211 - 10/16/01 10:07 AM (22 years, 5 months ago)

I'm about to begin my 4th attempt at casing. All 3 x's before this have failed to the green mold. I need to know do u have to sterile your bottom and top casing layers?? If so, what is the best way?? I will be using straight verm. layers......

Sterilize the verm by nuking it for several minutes in a plastic cup covered with seran wrap or better yet use a pressure cooker.

Right after you've made your three layers, cover with seran wrap held in place with a rubber band. That way, nothing falls on the casing and if you did a good job sterilizing the verm, you shouldn't have any problems. Just be sure to lysol the room, close the vents, and use rubbing alcohol on your hands when you make your casing

Hi,

Many contaminants attack casings because they're too wet. I make big batches of casing and sterilize one hour in the pressure unit, squeeze out excess moisture, then apply. Only lost one casing in two years.

Good luck!

What do u put it in b4 u put it in the PC?? I don't have any large containers to hold the verm?? also, when nuking....how long?

I'm assuming you add the water to the verm. b4 sterilizing??

Dito... Insomnia is right on... I follow this procedure pretty much like he put it and have never had a problem. I've found that the easiest way to make a batch of contam-free casing is to fill a bulk-spawn bag (mine come from Mycelium Fruits) with your casing of choice and PC at 15lbs. a good half hour. With this method i've never had a contamination problem... untill of course you've recased for about the 3rd time... but then things just tend to get a little messy.

I've never used the microwave for sterilization. I'm a fan of pressure sterilizers. Filling a quart jar or bigger with 50/50 wet peat moss/vermiculite, sterilized for an hour or so, will yield plenty of casing material. Of course, your mileage may vary.

Would a plastic tupperware container hold up to the PC'ing??

Also, was i right about adding the water 1st b4 sterilizing??

plastic tupperware would probably melt... maybe something rubbermaid would work but i wouldn't exactly recommend it. i've read that you can PC your casing in the same bags that the vermiculite and perlite come in (schultz brand anywayz), but i've never actually tried it cause i just use the autoclavable bulk-spawn bags.

yes, hydrate the casing mixture before you PC... if too moist after PCing, squeeze out excess moisture with your hands (i'd use gloves).

Okay...what about Reynolds oven bags?? could i put the verm. in it b4 PC'ing?? It says on the box to never exceed 400 degrees, but i don't know exactly how hot a PC gets.......

....i'm just trying to find something that will work for me to put the verm. in b4 PC'ing.......I don't seem to have anything else.

awe chit... i think you're on to something there josh. those should work perfect, and there's no way in hell that PCing gets over 400 degrees.

5lbs. pressure - 228 degrees F
10lbs. pressure - 240 degrees F
15lbs. pressure - 250 degrees F (ideal/30min.)

I use those reynolds oven bags religiously and they work great, I recommend them highly. Just be careful about letting the bag touch the sides of the pc'er, as they might tend to stick. Usually about 45 minutes is plenty.

Sweet!! I've got something that will work then........now, if i'm gonna case 6 of my 12 jars, how many cups of verm. should i sterilize for the casings??

Also, if i just sterilize a bunch and have some left over....would i have to re-sterilize the next time i go to use it?? or will it be okay not to?? as long as i keep it in the reynolds oven bag and make sure it stays sealed?

just use good judgement on deciding how much casing to prepare... you should have at least twice as much casing prepared as you do substrate (it's kinda like a sandwhich - bread on top and bottom, etc.)

as long as the bags stay sealed you shouldn't have a problem, but then again safe is better than sorry. (i always re-PC before using... no matter what).

No, just clean use a clean casing tray. Might I suggest using perlite as a bottom layer?

You can bake it or PC it. Add no water, just lay down a half inch. I've the suspicion your contam probs may have been from too wet casings. Just a theory, but a very common mistake.

DON'T add any water to the perilite?? not even when u go to case?? I thought the top and bottom layers were supposed to be moist??

What purpose does the perilite serve, if you don't add any water??

don't over-complicate if you've never had a contaminant free casing before... the more shit you add the more trouble you will have...

i would suggest using the 50/50 mix. it works great and when sterilizing with a PC you can't go wrong. layer of casing...layer of substrate...layer of casing...terrarium...patience...shroomies!!!

The perlite provides a reservoir for any excess water. It wicks water up to the mycelia and provides exceptional aeration, thereby reducing contams.

You keep the top layer moist, OK? Any excess, the perlite handles.

I was under the impression that for casings, u want the top and bottom layers to be moist.

For casings u make the cakes into smaller pieces.....like 1-2 cubic inches.

heres my lazy man casing tek.. grab your cake... crumble it straight on top of the perilite in your terrarium.. then cover it with a mound of plain dry verm and mist it down accordingly... voila.. never had 1 contam btw the verm has never been steralized.. i dunno how all you people are gettin the green molds.... must not be fanning enough.. each time Ive grown ive had various things like lit cigarettes.. toy figurines.. drinks spilled.. etc.. fall into the terrarium and in some cases right even on the cakes / casings and all was fine.
I also have never pressure cooked and still have not gotten molds.. I think it has something to do with the condition of the spores that effects the overall outcome.
