getting rid of personal possessions...

for the past few months there have been lots of break-ins in the area and etc. plus i've really been reading a lot more thats been suggesting I disconnect myself from material possessions.
I sat down and thought about the worst case scenario.. if someone were to come in and rob me at gunpoint what would i hate to lose most?
I made a list of those things, and over the past few weeks I have been selling them all off (with the exception of my computer.. heh ) but anyways, it really has been liberating although my friends are probably starting to think im showing signs of a suicidal person (as in selling / getting rid of my favorite things)
im not expecting some magic weight to be lifted fro my shoulders, but i do believe that next time I move, it can be a much smoother process
just wondering if anyone had any thoughts / similar experiences.

yes--ssen this --also done this...usualy we just play at the expendable itmes..those things dearer--well you know---we hang on and think --1000 no needs balances keeping 1 thing WE NEED!--need or posess..---we were born to experiment with hypocrisy --make a rule an dbrak our own rule...now the desir e to destroy our items instead of give away--shows another disposition--as is throwing away opposed to giving away...depends on background and such...

I've been pondering the same thing, but there is a difference in getting rid of the attachments, and getting rid of the underlying craving. If you still have that underlying craving then losing your attachments is just going to cause you more suffering.

yes --treating the underlying causation or ill-ness--better said dis----ease...is where its at...yet this is usually approached from anti-pathic point of view.....using opposites to cure....never happens...its what is similar and subtle enoug that stimulates response---thinkings/doings and all that shit come after---all in respos eto the right stimuli...law of similars...

Ive been to Mongolia out in the Gobi desert, they dont really have anything out there. They dont even live in houses, just in these one room portable homes called ger's, with whole familys living in them.
They spend there lives as nomads moving around with their goats.
Their the happiest people ive EVER met ! They live harsh lives in a harsh country, not thinking very much of personal possesions like we do, and they are better, more caring, welcoming, and generous people than most people in my country.
We can be so superficial, and easily bought into the idea that we need these things. God dammit we work all our lives so we can pay for them, so we can be like the next person. Its all good for the people making the money, thats how they like it.
Its not really good for the human race as a whole though.
Much better to stand out and not be blagged by the way people think things should be.
At least if you can

I'm sure they get a lot more ass out there than we do.

I am quite a Bit older than many of you. I have noticed two basic types of people pertaining to this thread.
One type hoards everything and strives to get as much stuff they can. They keep piling it up to say to the world " HEY LOOK AT ME AND HOW MUCH CRAP I HAVE. I HAVE MADE IT BIG EVERYBODY LOOK AT ME AND YOU SHOULD JUDGE ME BUY HOW MUCH CRAP I HAVE" They suffer from there own expectation and what they think the world expect from them. BULLSHIT !!! The world could care less........it is a trick so you will buy stuff from them so they can buy stuff from some other person. It is a round the round the pile of stuff game
The second type realizes they were born naked and they die naked. They learn that life is about people and love. Yes they understand that we need things to live but they are quick to see what is really important.
One thing I also noticed................The most joyful people I have ever known of the second type.
But don't just get rid of everything to find some new path to harmony with life. Just enjoy your new found understanding and move through life with a new sense of wealth. But I still would get rid of that Twinke behind the couch

haha.. thanks.
really, I wouldnt call myself materialistic.. i dont have a need to prove myself through my possessions.. however i AM a HUUGGE pack-rat. i think i got it fro mmy dad. so that is making this process that much harder, but still just as liberating.

My thoughts exactly !
You knowing that i wonder where you lie between the two types.
Im not that bothered about possesions ( part from my guitar, and one or two other things ) . I found this makes it hard for me to get of my arse and go to work, unless its something i really enjoy doing.
Maybe thats a good thing, maybe its not .
Is it possible to find a medium in this or is it like ' your either bothered, or your not '

Yes finding the place between is the key I guess. For some it may be one way of the other. I have quite a lot of stuff. some of it cost a huge sum but, I don't hold it in any real value to what is the real value in my life............does that make any sense ? Sure I also can be a pack rat at times. But I really do find it very liberating to just give away things or better just throw them out
When I was young our family had nothing we were very poor trashy people but I guess learning to live with nothing gave me a appreciation of............hum........ Family, love and friendship is the golden prize.
But now I would be considered to have a lot of Crap, cash etc...... I still don't really care about the things I have. Mostly I want my children to have an education paid for and I want to be able to build that house on the mountain and grow very old.........with enough cash to pay the doctor bills...........
Anyway enough about me again
You guys are right, stuff that dictates your path in life sucks
Run like the wind and enjoy stuff but know what you are. Star dust living the dream of Love and you will again be Star dust

Yup after watching fight club, I pretty much blew it all up too!
The only valuable thing I posses is my laptop, which soon too I will get detached from since Ill be traveling alot
Also Ive let go from the tv to the point that sometimes when Im bored and I turn it on, it bores me even further so I really cant stand it much.
Its really liberating to just grab a really good book and read all day, plus meet new people! Something that if you were a couch potatoe, wouldnt happen :P
