Soccer and America

Why does america give soccer the cold shoulder?
The press always rips on soccer, the sport never gets promoted like the other "big 3" sports, i hardly ever see highlights on Sports Center. MLS get relegated to ESPN 2 once a week, while i have to endure the arena football league or some PBA bowling skills trick shot challenge on a saturday afternoon. really, who the hell could name a bowling professional, yet, there it is, on TV in this country more than the world's favorite sport.
my theory is the reason soccer isnt in the mainstream sports media is as follows:
modern sports is so money driven, therefor, advertising for NFL games or NBA games costs millions. hell, the NBA has timeouts called "TV timeouts." advertisers shy away from soccer b/c there are no timeouts, there is no way to hock their products in the form of a 30 second spot like they want. putting your corporate logo next to the on-screen score box doesnt have the same effect as a 30 second spot about the latest "boner-pill" so corps. shy away from advertising out of a lack of creativity. this, in turn, offers no incentive for the major networks/ESPN to show games, soccer is never watched/discussed/analyzed by the masses.
worse yet, the lack of knowledge about the sport leads to its ridicule. soccer is not as tough as football or rugby, but its certainly as physical as bascketball and more physical than baseball. yet, it gets this rap as being a sport for pansy asses.
any thoughts?

i love to play the game and it's reasonably physical, but i'd say not as much as b-ball
it's just boring to watch
and aside from commercials, soccer has way more advertisement than other sports the jerseys are plastered with siemens and sony and shit as are the stadiums

it just doesnt compare to watching basketball or football..

The lack of interest is due to ignorance of the game (the time out thing may have something to do with promotion of the sport but if there was a market they would fill it regardless). Given the fact that it is so low scoring I find that even the inkling of a threat, if you can see it, is very exciting. The World Cup is fantastic because the players are so adept at taking advantage of every defensive mistake. I remember watching a game last WC and seeing a player get control deep in his own zone but with too much space. Sure enough, bing bang boom, easy goal. It was perfection. Either you get it or you don't. Most Americans don't realize what a threat every corner kick is, or every trip into the penalty box.

it's not much different in terms of scoring and such than hockey save for corner kicks
i loved corner kicks back in the day at goalie, i'd fuck that shit up

Goals are much more common in hockey than in competitive footie. I was a keeper. I fucking hated corners. They were too often like pinball. High and close... no problem; out there too far to wreck...no chance. Hated shit I couldn't see.

hackey doesn't score that often
that's exactly why i liked corners, they're so hectic
plus if you leap over some cat and snag the ball you look like a total badass

There is a hell of a lot more scoring in hockey than in soccer. I also think that soccer is a lot more commercialized than most other sports. There are ads everywhere. There aren't any TV commercials, but each half is sponsored by major corporations in order to keep it commercial free. Some soccer players make just as much money as the top stars in other leagues.

Yeah the best American soccer players all play on euro club teams. MLS blows. They just need a big ass tv contract or something. Doubt that will happen because we have our own, better sports in the USA

I've always loved soccer I played competitively for over a decade. I still put on my cleats from time to time and join in games at the Nets.

AS Roma beat Real Madrid in the Cotton Bowl and about 20 fans invaded the pitch before the match was over. Many of them took selfies.

Did you guys see that guy kick a 50 yd FG with the broncos training camp like it was nothing.
Im amazed they don’t sign one of those dudes when they are too old to be good at soccer anymore. Didn’t the vikings have like a 50 year old kicker?

I did see that. You gotta be able to deal with kick offs though. Remember Louis Sakoda?
