lol those Brits and their sports. I was watching soccer the other day and it was complete anarchy clock wise. The clock never stopped and the referee would add a minute here, a minute there whenver he wanted. There's also a rugby team called the Springboks, lol - named after a miniature antelope

At the end of both halves, the ref can add more play time, it's called over time. It just a way to compensate any stoppage, probably not accurate to the second, but contrary to stopping the clock, it's a way to put the players head into the game and not too much into the clock.

The two teams with the highest points go to the next round?

Yes, but in this world cup i think not all second teams on each group will go to next round. I'm not sure but i think only 2 second places will be out. It has to do with the number of groups, there's not place for everyone. In case of tie, goal average makes the decision.

Then why count goals? Is that what it goes too in case of tie?

What if goals are tied too?

Yes, goals count (goal average) , but first there's a rule in case of tie in the classification: the result of the games with the tied team. Imagine that Mexico is tied with Portugal at the end of the playoff. First you have to see who won the game Mexico vs Portugal, who won gets first place or gets ahead of the other team. If that game resulted in a tie, you apply the goal average rule of all goals scored by both teams in the playoff.

http://www.soccerphile.com/soccerphile/wc2006/schedule/schedule.html

Shows the tournament schedule of how it works.

In the first round the top two teams in every group proceed to the next round.

Also, if you come first in your group, this means you have a better chance because you get to play the team that came second in another group. For example:

GROUP A

1st place: Germany
2nd place: Poland

GROUP B

1st place: Sweden
2nd place: Portugal

So in the second round it would be Germany vs Portugal and Sweden vs Poland.

In the second round it is no longer points - it is elimination. So if you don't win the game, pack yer bags cause you're going home.
