Filter vs. No Filter
    #546020 - 02/09/02 08:04 PM (19 years, 9 months ago)

I recently posted on this forum that the use of filters on jars of spawn were a waste of time and money. I was wrong. I should not have made such comments when I did not know if what I was claiming was entirely true. For all I know, I may have been the only one NOT using filters. I apologize for any loss of business I may have caused MicronMagick. I am posting the results of my own tests to try and make it up to MicronMagick. I am not a sock puppet. I just feel guilty about what I said after finding out that filters actually DO make a positive difference. Here's what I found:

This is a pic of 6 jars WITH filters 6 days after a grain to grain transfer. Strain is PF Classic.

These are 6 more jars WITHOUT filters innoculated at the same time and kept under the same conditions.

I'm not sure if anyone decided not to buy filters from MicronMagick because of my comments. I doubt it actually. But, if anyone did hold back an order, I would urge you to go ahead and purchase filters from MicronMagick. They definitely DO help.

Take care,

bassplayer74

bassplayer,

Thats very big of you to do.

I have noticed less contams with the filter discs.

I have only had 3 jars go bad since i have used micron filter discs.

And i probably did something to the jars myself.

I'm not dissing filters but I don't use them and I don't have problems. I consistently see 100% colonization in 8 days from multi-spore and even less using live tissue - year after year after year....get the point?.
I do not get contamination either. When I was first starting out I did. Then I came up with a better way of preparing my jars. I even had pink mold which some of you may know has very tiny spores that even filters can't block and I have never seen it since. I'm not saying that I wouldn't try filters though for fun.

I posted my procedure before in a similar post.

Same here, I've never had a need for them. I've never had any problems that could be traced back to a lack of a filter.

Mind you, my air is pretty clean here on the side of a mountain next to the ocean. Maybe people in the city could benifit from a filter although I know for a fact that the air we live in and breathe is not as contaminated as some people would have you believe.

Nice post. I want to get a project under way comparing tyvek to poly fill filter floss. I have done only about 40 1.5qt jars, but only found contamination in 2. One was unsure, and the second was from agar slices which i was ATTEMPTING to clean with h2o2.

How much are these mycron magic filters, and why should i use them over poly fill? i can buy 2 cubic feet of poly fill for $4.

Speaking of h2o2, has anyone ever successfully pulled healthy mycelium from agar with contamination around it? I have been fairly unsuccessful.
First of all, i've tried 4 or 5 different times to get these other 3 strains going (bought from hawkes eye) but every time contamination develops in the agar. (when going directly from the syringe) the B+ goes perfectly. I use a flowhood with a hepafilter, and always spray it down with 99% alcohol prior to any use. B+ absolutely FLIES in the PDA agar.
