new type of contamination
    #550506 - 02/13/02 08:00 PM (21 years, 9 months ago)

my jars got infested with maggots! iv'e lost one jars from a batch of two. my father approprated the vermiculite i bought to use in his garden. when the small cache i kept in my room ran out, i had to use my dad's, which had been sitting outside in an open container. apparently it got fly eggs in it. i pressure cooked the jars, but i didnt bake the vermiculite before filling the jars like i usually do. couple weeks later i saw a maggot crawling out of one of the holes in the jar. there must have been thirty more inside. i threw the cake away, but when the same thing hapened to the other cake a week later, i opened up the jar in my garage and attacked it with my propane torch. the little maggots and hard brown things (cacoons? eggs? pupae?) made little popping noises. i burned the vermiculite layer until it glowed, then closed the jar, sealed it with duct tape, and rubbed it down with alcohol and h2o2. this all happened last night i don't know if all the maggots are dead, or if i killed the mycelium along with it. by the way, the substrate in the jars was pennington's finch seed. just for fun i had mixed the contents of a 50 mg capsule of 5-htp into the first jar to see what would happen. ill have to try that again later.

As far as getting sick from contamination, your fairly safe with maggots. In survival training they teach you how to use maggots to stop the spread of gangrene. Maggots will only eat/infest rotten flesh; they won't spread to or kill living flesh.

They have actually started to use "maggot theropy" in some hospitals. Maggots only eat the rotten flesh and leave the healthy flesh alone. They're actually wonderfull (if somewhat disgusting) tools to clean up a wound. Maggots actually do a better job then a doctor ever could.
