Maggots...In the Substrate Jar...Maggots...
    #929576 - 10/03/02 08:26 PM (22 years, 8 months ago)

Well our lab technicians showed me a jar today,
And what I saw was not pretty...maggots...
Maggots in a substrate jar.

Half pint BRF/Verm.,
Halfway colonized with Ecuador strain,
Being attacked, by maggots, in the jar.

It was a sad day for that jar  :frown:

How did they get there?
The jars were pressure cooked (by my lab assistants) for 1 hour 15psi,
Ramsey vermiculite seal,
A piece of poly at the innoculation hole (1 hole),
Each jar was ziplocked in baggie..

Did these...Maggots..., come from the lab technicians syringe?
Will these...Maggots (cringe)..., begin living in other jars?

Maggots (cringe)...

They come from little gnats/flies coming into jars and laying eggs. Eggs hatch larva(maggots) and then turn into flies.

Thats how i understand things work. Ive had bugs crawl into some jars. Never maggots tho.

...they are ziplock bagged though...?
Sneaky little bugs...
So, how can this be prevented from happening again,
This is the first time our lab tech's have ever encountered this,
But, this can never happen again.....maggots...In the jar....

Try putting all of them in an incubation container with RAID sprayed around the rim...maybe

your lid must have fallen off or not been tight. Theres no way maggots can get in unless theres a large opening. flies cant get under the lid unless its really lose then they crawl under the foil and into the 4 innoculation holes. a good idea would be to keep bugs out of your house or store the jars inside a plastic container and use bug spray around that

I've had maggots in my jars before. They make the jars smell horrible too. I almost vomited trying to clean it up.
