Did I loose these 20 cakes??
    #550440 - 02/13/02 06:45 PM (21 years, 7 months ago)

Hey all. Alright, I started my first cultivation of mushrooms at the end of december. 2 weeks later I had some fully colonized cakes.  I was using a crapy rubermaid container with a spray bottle for a while and the cakes started to fruit.  After deciding that I didn't want to hand spray 10 times a day, I built a terrarium with a humidifier.  By this time, I had about 20 cakes that did not fruit.

I put all the cakes into the new terrarium and I would air it out every second day and make sure it was very damp. Well not one of them fruited!!!  I think it's cauz they didn't get enough air circulation.  I have just built an automated system that will automatically air out and humidify the terrarium but I need cakes to try and fruit.

Now to my question.  These cakes have been in the terrarium upwards of 3 weeks.. They are kinda dry.  I'm pretty sure they are "dead" but i'v never done this before.  Think it's too late, or can I try rehumidifying them??  I read about how you can dunk them in water to re-moisten the cake.  Think this is possible??

What color are they?
If they just look dry I'd say dunk.

never know until you try ... im going to say there's hope ... i dont really know anything about the dunking method but i would immagine it has something to do with leaving it in water over night or something ... if you do this boil your bottled or distilled water for half an hour first and then let it cool to room temp...

Well,

You don't have nothing to lose trying to dunk them.

Put the cakes in jars....and fill with sterile water.
Try dunking them for 12 hours up right......then flip them for 12 hours on the lid.
In the frig.

Then every other day inject 10 cc of sterile water into the cakes.

You might be able to save them...never know.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

K, that's it's good to know that there is at least hope.

I meant to ask this before but I forgot. Can anybody give me a URL to some good instructions for "dunking" cakes.. it seem simple enough but I want to make sure.

Also, I'v been using distilled or spring water in my humidifier. Is it OK to use tap water for this?

Its ok to use tap water, much of the crap gets left behind in the process.

I think theres a dunk tek in the grow find section on this site, or if not theres probably one in the FAQ. If not, its as simple as placing your cakes in sterilized water for anywhere from 2 to 8 hours depending on your situation. (although some of the old timers used to use milk)
