One more question ;-) I have a heating pad, but should i use it?

Hello, and thanks again for taking the time to read my question.

I own a heating pad. The kind that is made by Jiffy for seed starting.
My house is usually kept around ~75 degrees F.

I could use the heating pad. We live in a relatively humid environment, but right now we are extremely low on moisute in the air and could use some rain. We're quite dryer than we normally are at this time of year and are suffering a mild drought.

My concern with using the heating pad is potential moisture loss. However, since we keep the house so cool, I am also concerned that it may not be warm enough for optimal growth. One solution I thought about was, since my incubation chamber is just a big rubbermaid tub is letting the tub sit in one of my windowseats, where the sunlight makes a little micro-climate and warms it up to about 80.

Thoughts, suggestions, advice? Anything from you excperienced mycologists would be helpful to get me going in the right direction.

Heating pads have a pretty bad track record and generally should be avoided. If this one is made for seed starting, it might not be like the kind most people use and might not be so bad... still I wouldn't trust it. 75 degrees is a fine colonization temp, it's not optimal, but it will do just fine. If you wanna put the rubbermaid by the window to warm it up a bit, that would probably be fine too. Like I said, 75 degrees is fine, but if you really want to incubate and already have one rubbermaid to let them colonize in, you might as well spend the 25 bucks on another rubbermaid and an aquarium heater to build a TiT style incubator.

I actually own another rubbermaid container.. and a completely submersible aquarium heater. For the moment, this wouldn't be practical for me for various reasons, but the next grow, I am DEFINITELY going to do it that way. Thank you!!!

Search for the "heatbomb" tek. If you have a submersible heater already you can throw it together in no time.

Thanks guys.. I got an idea. I have a "data closet." Its where I keep a few servers and such. The ambient temperature in there stays about a constant 80, and I made some room for my incubation chamber. So we'll see what happens :-D
