Heating pad start fires?
    #1213731 - 01/13/03 08:12 AM (14 years, 3 months ago)

I read stories in the newspapers that some lady burnt her house down from leaving her heating pad on all day which sparked a fire. I want to use a heating pad for the incubator, I figured it is simple to do. The only thing I'm worried about is if it will get to the right temp and cause a fire from being on 24/7?

I don't have one yet because i'm worried about it causing fires. Know where I can get a temp adjustable heating pad? You figure the new heating pads wouldn't start fires?

Ive had a reptile heating mat plugged in for near enuff 5
solid years 24/7 and ive never had any trouble. But then you do have
to be careful whats on or touching it.Make sure nothing flamerbal like
man made fibers/wood/cardboard ext.Plastice rubbermaid with some
water in isnt going to catch fire in my opinon.

EDIT:You can get good modern ones that are adjustebal from good reptile/pet stores

I have one too, and it goes to about 130 degrees. The burning point of paper is 415, and expecially if you put it under something like a rubbermaid container or a glass aquarium, there's nothing to burn. Maybe your just paranoid. You still haven't told me what kind of heating pad the lady had. Was it an electric blanket? A hot plate for coffee or tea? Reptile heating pad?

They cost between ?15 and ?50 pounds the more money the better options.
the cheap ones with out thermostats work ok just put more or less of the pad under the rubber maid till you reach the desired heat.

But its worth the investment of a thermostat as the others are on constantly and can cause heat to build up.

I was searching around the web for some heating products. I found this one: http://www.petdiscounters.com/small_animal/reptile/heaters/zm_rt500r_thermostat.html

I was wondering if i could hook up a non thermastatic heating pad to this to get the right temp?

dasaullit hit the nail on the head. the pads don't heat to fire starting temps. the chances of them starting a fire are just as good as anything else with an AC cord starting a fire. the fire will most likely occur because of a frayed cord or loosely plugged in plug. the largest fire starter is sparks from a device turning on/off. the thermostat of the pad is the most dangerous part. make sure there aren't flammable fumes in the area, which I seriously doubt there are.
