Aborted shiitake???
    #5373232 -

Hey guys i am new to this board and i am looking for someone with some experience growing shiitake to help me out a bit.
I have just started growing shiitake on sawdust blocks and they seemed to be producing ok but recently i had about 50 blocks appear to be begining to fruit so i took the bags off of them all. Everything seemed to be going along fine until i went out to examine them today and found that the vast majority of the developing mushrooms had no caps. Basicaly they have what looks like the begining of a cap that never formed on them and they are just overgrown stems. I am totaly confused (and bummed) as to what i may have done wrong and i was wondering if anyone here might know what is up. thanks.

I have plenty of light (fluorescent) and i don't use pesticides but the other 2 are possibilities. I am confused about the co2, I have had mushrooms grow fine inside the bags before and there are some mushrooms in my grow room that are growing fine. Is it possible that co2 could affect most of the mushrooms to the extent that they don't produce caps at all? Also about the chlorine thing, I have been watering the crop with regular tap water , is that bad?

YesAlso about the chlorine thing, I have been watering the crop with regular tap water , is that bad? If it's water with chlorine, could be. If you keep the environment between 70 80%, you don't need to water the crop. Between crops soak your blocks in water without chlorine.

I'd say the tap water was a bad idea - it varies so widely from place to place and often does contain chlorine; use spring water from now on!

As for the co2, are you talking about spawn bags? They definitely need to be removed from those. You can simply place the block on a plate and put a humidity tent(see:clean garbage bag with holes punched in it), over the top. A greenhouse/FC would be better. Cheers
