after waiting many weeks, i decided to make my own terrarium for this thing instead of using Paul's wimpy humidity tent. it holds humidity so much better, and only a few days after dunking this thing again i finally have a nice sized pin growing. anyone else have probs with the humidity tent from fungi perfecti?

if you want a humidity tent just throw the block in a garbage bag, i swear its like the best freaking tent ever.
I had a block of shimj or w/e their called, sitting in my fc. I was still tweeking the humidity setup but it was always around 75%(not the best)
anyways i was done working with it so i threw it in a garbage bag all by itself, and tied it up like normal trash. However I left it laying on the ground for about a week or 2. When i opened it up I had the nicest looking flush from a block that I grew. Musta been about 15-20 caps the size of a dollar coin.
Humidity is a big pinning trigger and if your tent isn't positioned right or misted enough you'll never hit the numbers you need.
contam might be a problem this route, but i must say it was really simple, worth an experiment with a block your about to chuck

Shiitake really doesn't need much humidity. In fact, many growers reduce humidity right after primordia formation in order to cause scaling on the caps. I'd be more concerned about only getting one mushroom. Did you give it a week or so at around 45F to 55F? Shiitake do much better after a cold shock, followed by an overnight soak. RR

I tried fruiting shiitake at 75%, then I bumped it up to i think 80% both times I ended up with aborts(during winter).
With my setup, ive gotten best results by having a condensing fog, I also end up with puddles which isn't good. (Bear in mind its winter and the furnace is sucking the humidity out) I like to keep my door loose for air, but man can i tell a difference when I close it some, its amazing how much air your furnace sucks out of your FC.
I didn't have any problems till the furnace started running.
So till winters over the only thing I feel safe doing is a condensing fog, maybe others are having this problem to and don't even realize it?
Once winter is over, its alot easier to grow shiitake in my opinion, except for the cold shocking

yeah, i was thinking of using a trash bag actually, but got creative and made a small terrarium... it works well, but i think i was too late..
RR i cold shocked it in the fridge for about a week, then dunked it, but that was weeks ago, i already did a second dunk, should I have cold shocked it prior?

cold shocking is lowering the temp while initiating fruiting
you put in fridge if you arent using right away

cold shocking is shocking it with cold temps aka fridge
however i have tried cold shocking + dunking (floating) + light for 48 hours and went from no pins to about 3-4 pins on the water side..pretty fast growth
whenever i dunk a block i set it in a nice cold place as a bonus
if your block feels dry maybe give it another dunk, if its really dry and you want to experiment, try a 48hr dunk in a cold spot, (preferably changing the water and checking for stability & contam after the first 24hr)
i think you said its been weeks since you dunked it last? i would def give it another dunk and then try fruiting again
