Chlorinated water supply
    #8930070 - 09/14/08 06:58 PM (15 years, 4 months ago)

Im curious about the effect, if any, that treated city water has on the oyster mushrooms fruiting cycle.  The better in-line water filters say they remove chlorine odor and flavor but is the chlorine still there?  I did find a post that stated shiitake blocks dunked in treated tap water didnt perform as well as those dunked in spring water. Its like a cloud in my grow room and Im concerned an elavated level of chlorine is affecting my pinset.  I get mushrooms but feel like I could have a bit better production.  Thanks for any insight.

I grew for years in a big city and never noticed any bad effects.  The amount of chlorine is very low.

Each and every city and town has different water. The water comes from a lot of different sources, and is treated with differing types of chemicals from facility to facility. Mineral contents vary widely, and some places use chlorine as a disinfectant, others use chloramine, and some places add various types of flouride for stronger teeth.

Some mushroom growers see differences when switching water sources, others don't. I would suggest visiting some aquarium-enthusiast forums and websites for more info. Fish are VERY sensitive to chemicals  Most pet-stores and larger grocery stores sell additives to neutralize chlorine for fish.

I suspect each kind of mushroom probably has varying tolerance levels for chemicals in the water. I also suspect that some of the shrooms do better with when there are small amounts of harmless bacteria present.
