Ok, larksinc, I will show you some stuff, but not in person, because from experience, it never quite works that well. I always look by myself, it's the only way to know for sure
This species, cyanescens complex, is rare here in the Bay Area. In my 20 years of picking, I would say that Stropharia species outnumbers psilocybe species by at least 100 to 1, that is, for evey 100 places you find non-edible, non-poisonous common Stropharias, you might find one patch of cyans in the back somewhere. Sometimes it's the opposite, but that is even more rare.
Right now, larksinc, it's a little late in the season and I'll show you why. I grew up a little in San Bruno, and went to Westborough Jr High up near skyline. When you travel to GG Park from San Bruno to look for shrooms, I ask, why? why would you go that far when mushrooms were growing right there in San Bruno this year.
Note to the admins, there are NO actives locations in this message, so I don't mind saying some location, it's simply to show habititat, the type of environment they grow in...This photo > http://img133.imageshack.us/img133/5549/m15tf.jpg
This is Sneath Ln, right above the 280 Freeway...Go up, about a half mile, you will see a huge woodchip pile right along Sneath...about halfway up to Skyline...Again, there are NO actives in this patch, this is all stropharias, mostly the red stropharias as pictured here.
About 2 weeks after this photo was taken I went back there and it was almost solid red with those stropharias, to the point where you couldn't find a place to plant actives even if you wanted to.
I've checked this repeatedly over the years and never found actives there, yet it is still possible...Why?...because the P cyanescens complex is just like any other wood chip species, and someday, instead of seeing all stropharias, you might see all cyanescens...And why is that?...it is because each species has weaker and stronger strains, and while this year and last year Stropharia rules this patch, all it takes is a very aggresive strain of cyanescens to infiltrate and fight back.....
Things like this change all the time, from year to year, and I think it's a little late in the season this year, see the date on the photo, Dec 6, 2005...One suggestion I have for you. It is very easy to find this woodchip pile along Sneath Ln, but there's no parking nearby..Blink, and you'll miss it going up or down that hill, but it's right on the side of the road.
Go up there soon, in the next few weeks, and pick out any place in that woodchip pile and dig down a few inches. I guarantee just about anywhere you stick you finger, you'll find white mycelium about 2 inches below the surface, and NONE of it is actives, but it's the exact same enviroment...it just didn't happen *there*
but two miles south along the same skyline, in another city, I found this >
>> location undisclosed
and also more of those same red stopharias, except this time, the red ones didn't overtake the entire area like the San Bruno woodchip pile
Further up Sneath Lane and just north on Skyline in the opposite direction, is Skyline College, where I took this photo at the top of the hill >

Again, I've bicycled up there many times and never have found any actives, but there are lots of stropharias, and lots of woodchips, so maybe one of these daaaaaaaays...It might be next year, or ten years from now...nobody knows
Also, on Sneath Lane near El Camino is a cemetary, and on the corner of that starts a loooong woodchip dump, also with nothing but red stropharias (I've checked it many times)..
see how much work it takes? I've seen people on this forum complain about people who say "go out and look"...But people like me complain "do you have any idea how much work is involved"?...There is in fact, only one way to do it...You have to get up out of your seat, get in you car, walk or bike, and start exploring your city here in the Bay Area.
Even if it is too late in the season, like now, even in Golden Gate Park.....Something you can do all year long, no matter what the season > pay attention to anywhere you see woodchips, it doesn't matter if you see mushrooms or not..write it down if you have to and go back and check it again in November/December...check it twice..check it thrice.
You know how many places I pay attention to all year long in the bay area when I see woodchips?...I lost count long ago, but it's over 10,000, and all from memory. Almost all of them I can check in the 1 month critical period like this year.
All of this is in public places, and none of it is private. Every single one of the places I know about, anybody can find, and THAT, folks, is the whole point
Take for example, this photo >
You know where this is...I don't need to be more specific...Again, these are NOT active...just another little brown mushroom, possibly mycena, I have no clue
Lastly, here's a good challenge for all you location sluts, and I mean that in a friendly way..
Try and figure this one out, aspecially you Tahoe...After a few months when I looked at it, it took me a few hours to remember where I took this myself..I seriously had trouble remembering where I took this photo, but it's one of THE most diabolical locations ever in San Francisco....In fact, you're looking at the skyline in the background, including the Transamerica Pyramid >>
You will see that the San Francisco skyline is in the background....In the foreground is more woodchips, and more red stropharias...No actives here either :P
Yet, it is still possible they can occur at some future date. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY can say for sure
The point is, it's not good enough to know a place like Golden Gate Park...well, ok...maybe sometimes,
but still, why bother with GG Park when they grow all over the bay, including...(well at least very close to) San Bruno..
Certainly they can grow in San Bruno itself....Just because I haven't found them in the city proper, doesn't mean they dont actually grow there...In fact, it's very likely they grow in San Bruno, somewhere..
I just havn't found it.........yet....hehe
One more time...where is that last photo with a view of the skyline?...3 brownie points and a couple more clues with the right answer..hehe
