Lobster Mushrooms

I always find Lobster mushrooms on my hikes, However I am always hesitant to eat them, Because every reference i read says you must identify the host first, which is impossible. I am fairly sure they are O.K. Any thoughts on the subject

Well there is a possibility that the host could be a poisonous mushroom, although this is not really known to happen, it is still worth considering.
There is more to be said, but this link pretty much covers it. http://botit.botany.wisc.edu/toms_fungi/aug2001.html to quote Tom Volk: "If you eat this mushroom you're taking a very, very slim chance of there being a problem, in my opinion."

The idea that you must identify the host is interesting, but there are no recorded poisonings from Lobster Mushrooms. Also, even the best of experts would find it a challenge to identify the host - it has been greatly transformed by the parasitic fungus.
I've tried them - they were OK. As with most mushrooms, I'm sure how good they are has a lot to do with how they are prepared.
Happy mushrooming!

Lactarius and Russula, the typical host of the lobster mold (Hypomyces lactifluorum), are not known as genera that produce deadly poisonous mushrooms, however some of them can cause gastrointestinal upset. That being said, I have never know anyone to be ill after consuming so called ?lobster mushrooms?. georgeM

The worst to happen will probably be gastrointestinal distress. If you're worried about initially trying them then try a small piece to check for any reaction.
Where will you be hunting them? It may help to know what kind of potential hosts there are in your area.

Thanks for all the replies. This fall I will eat the first. It is frustrating because some walks I can collect 10-15 choice specimens easy.

I found these a few years ago. They were delicious.
