lobster mushrooms?
    #1711445 - 07/13/03 01:02 PM (20 years, 11 months ago)

anybody know much about lobster mushrooms? I've found what i'm fairly sure to be lobster mushrooms growing along a path an a wooded/grassy area in town, side by side with russulas. I know that the lobster mushroom is actually pre existing mushroom parasitized by the lobster spores, and so on and so forth, and i know that russulas are common targets, so it seems to all make sense, i was mostly interested in growing conditions, i found quite a few a couple of years ago about this time of year, and the other day i found an old dried up one in the same place... any pointers on the best places to find them if my patch doesn't pan out?

I've never found them myself, and haven't heard much about them. I have tasted them before, and I thought they were really good.

The latin name is Hypomyces lactifluorum. You might want to give google a shot and do a search to see if you can find any pictures or descriptions.

Arora notes that they DO favor Russula and Lactarius, and are fairly widly distributed.

Don't know much about them myself. My last duck hunting trip to Minnesota I mushroom hunted some nice state forest and found lots of them, this was in ocbtober. Never did try any, I couldn't find the hosts for most of them, and I wasn't sure if they would be safe to eat or not. Is there any report confirming that these mushrooms can and have taken up toxins from another poisonous species it parasitized?

Heres a pic...

Different people have different feelings as to the edibility of the lobster shrooms. I'm in kansas and the local mycological society has said that KS lobsters are delectable, and my understanding is that they are edible when growing on russula, even if the original russula may not be so palatable. Everybody pretty much says steer clear unless you can conclusively ID the host, but nobody seems to say much beyond that, such as which hosts make edible/non-edible specimens...

I can tell you that there are no recorded poisonings by them.

Several of my books say that you should identify the host before you consider eating them, but that's probably beyond anybody but a few professionals.

Here in Colorado they seem to parasitize Russula brevipes, so you should probably find an area where that species grows.

Happy mushrooming!

went back to the spot and found another one today, just one, already parasitized, with no host mushrooms to be found. When i found them years ago it was some sort of russula that they were growing on and there were a lot of them, but i was scared to eat them :-( and now that i'm confident on my ID, the most direct route to the patch has a motion detector and crazy mechanized gate... creepy.
