Oven Tek for Inoculation 1

Does anyone here have experence with the Oven Tek where you use a oven set on low heat and use a pulled out grill for use as a flow hood? I have read much here via searching, it seems like a cheap reliable method for use in handling prints and syringies. Just curious as to other's opinions. Thanks

Im glad you two both brought up the subject of the heat. Some oven teks say to use the "lowest heat setting" while others say to use a "low heat setting". Can anyone here advise as to how high the oven can be turned up before it's too hot to work around (granted, a stupid question) or how hot that it can be set untill the spores risk being killed. (I live to ask stupid questions like this) :)

This method works excellent. CaptainMaxMushrooms, who is the orgin of the tek I believe, reports having a open jar on the rack of a oven set at *blah* tempurature for 20 or 30 minutes and no contamination. Also, I have made many syringes via. oven tek with no problem. Overall, a great low cost sterility tek.

I think you`re getting confused CheshirePhat. The oven tek is just used for innoculating your jars or agar transfers to petri dishes.... The hot air rising keeps air-born contams away from the work. The oven is not used in place of a pressure cooker for jars. I agree with the others... The oven tek works like a charm. i`ve done over 50 jars with no contams . I put my jars right inside the oven on a plate. Oven set low... about 150 or 140 no hotter... flame your needle in an alcohol flame and have a paper towel with lysol to cool the needle and further sterilize before entering the jars. Great tek... I`ll never use anyhing else now.

The highest heat setting that should be used can be found by increasing the temp untill you see the hair on your hands starting to burn, turn down the heat a tad from there and you've got it:). Joshua

Do you have to keep the oven on at the lower heat during injection? Or do you just use the heat to initially sterilize?

This thread was moved from Mushroom Cultivation.
Reason: The oven tek is garbage. There is nothing sterile about using an oven and this thread is 17 years old
