Micro morels
    #5231513 -

Id like to know if anyone here has ever found them like I have. I have an outdoor cultivated patch of morels that i spawned myself. When I find the morels fruiting, I can look really close to the dirt and find little morels, the size of a pencil led or smaller. They are about 20x more abundant than the big morels. They are not aborts either, they are fully developed fruit bodys, with stem and cap. It makes me wonder since there are allot more tiny morels than big, are the big ones just big flukes of nature, of a mushroom that is supposed to be very small?

Yellow morels.

The final substrate was a mixture of oak, maple, elm wood chips. Half of the chips was charred in a fire, purposely. Then I mixed in lots of sand, soil, verm, leaves, and covered it with straw and leave. Mushrooms grow great in woodsy soil with lots of mineral and burnt wood, is the reason for the sand and soil.

Don't expect thick flushes of pounds of mushrooms like cubes, you'll be doing good to get a plate full of morels.

Flood the patch with water before and during suspected fruiting season.

Yeah, the tiny ones are common. It seems there is a divergent evolution process occurring, which favors the large and the tiny but excludes the middle sizes. As to why? Shit, if I understood morels I could be a wealthy man.

Only three more months till morel season. Woot! Woot!

I was thinking in the same way last night, about the evolution of them. Im glad you have seen them too.

What I like to do with them is put them in a blender and broadcast them about everywhere on my property, in hopes that they hold the genetic ability to produce large ones too.

Look up The evolution of the morel mushroom in google, there is a pretty awesome file, althogh i can only grasp bits of it with my mycological vocabulary.

have you ever seen the canadian morels, the huge ones? I know a guy that used to go there every year and come back with morels the size of quart jars, bags full. He had pics of them growing and all, he claims most people in canada know of them, and that they are the only morels people seek there. They are super ugly looking (much more than yellow morels), but taste good.

I haven't ever seen Canadian morels, but they occasionally get really big in West Virginia and Ohio.

These two photos are of the same mushroom. I've got pretty big hands.
