Can someone explain hooking up a guitar to my computer
    #5225255 - 01/26/06 11:12 AM (14 years, 10 months ago)

I know how to physically do it. 1/4in -> 1/8in adapter on the guitar cable end, and that goes into either my

a.) Line-In
b.) Mic-In

I'm not sure which. I've never dealt with anything but real line-outs like CD players and mixer outputs and stuff like that. What is a preamp and why do I apparently need one? How do you guys do it.

I've got Cubase and AmpliTube all set up. I just need to know details on the physical connection.

do you have a soundcard? if so, the slot not being used by the speakers.
i dont think it matters, but it might sound different.
if you have in the mic., go with line-in.
preamp's are cool, you dont need one, but the quality, isent very good,
i got a new tascam portastudio, it has a built in harddrive, you record on this(cd quality), and then when you fill up your 40 gig HD, you transfer to computer, though usb. to master it.
that way you dont get that crappy quality of guitar to computer.
and that annoying hiss.

my 0.35 cents.

I have been using my mic input because the playback seems to be louder through it than with my line in..but either one should work. You can always just try both and play around with the volume controls to figure out which one works best for you. The only difference between the two is your line is a stereo connection whereas your mic will be in mono. Mono should be fine if you are just using it for your guitar, but either port should do the job.

It might be a good idea to try and prop up the patch cord with something while it is connected to your soundcard to relieve some of the stress, I ended up with a pretty buggy input on my last soundcard becasue the weight of it hanging out over time apparently warped the inside of the jack. It might also be a good idea to take it out while you are not using it.

Mbox portable micro-studio

My friend uses it with his keyboard, not sure if a guitar would work with it

You need a preamp between your guitar and the soundcard.

If you have an amp plug the guitar in to it take the line out or headphone out to your soundcard.

btw I have a new, unused Line6 Pod XT Live I'd sell to a Shroomerite for $300.
It's the best guitar amp modeler/ FX / USB Recording Interface for the price.

It would bypass your soundcard all together and record @ 24/48...

i used a cheap ass headset and just throw it next to my amp
the quality is absolutely horrible with all the white noise, but i can get rid of most of it with FruityLoops equalizer.

i usually dont record for quality, just to work on musical arrangements.. hear different tracks layered together and stuff, so im not too picky. Someday i would like to have really good equipment though.
