Computer recording w/ keyboard

This could go in here or in science and tech but I this is probably a better place to put this ...
I have this old keyboard that I am able to plug into my computer. It uses this cable which I have a picture of below. I was wondering how I could record with this, or at least get sound from it through my computer. I thought that someone may be able to determine this by the kind of cable it uses to connect.

umm that looks very unfamiliar to me...... it should have a midi-out port on it somewhere, and then you would want to purchase a soundcard with midi-in... Then you're in business.

Well, it isn't necessarily a real keyboard. If I remember correctly it came with some software designed to teach young kids how to play the piano. I found it at my parents house and thought I might be able to use it.
Manufacturer: Jump music
I can't find the model number, would the serial number help at all?

well I found a few reviews for the jump music keyboard and from what I've read, it is MIDI - you need to get a MIDI cable and a MIDI soundcard.
I have no idea what the hell those other cords are for

Looks like a serial or parallel cable May require opening up your computer's casing to attach (if a serial cable).
These websites may be of some help to you: http://home.earthlink.net/~rongonz/home_rec/midi.html http://www.digitalmusicworld.com/html/hardware/ConnectingPCs/MidiTutorialP1.php
Good luck!

Man...we are so spoiled with USB and Firewire.
Those are older serial cables. I remember a soundcard I had with some serial connections. I believe it was for a joystick though.
Any decent computer store will sell serial cables that you can add to your computer. You shouldn't have to open anything up to attach them.
I wouldn't bother buying anything unless you have some software that came with the computer...or finding a driver on the internet..because I doubt your computer would detect that thing. I could be wrong though.

You need a sound card with a midi port:

With this sound card pictured (the Fortissimo II) I have an option in the drivers to adjust volume and such on the midi, I've never used it.. but I believe it would function just as a line-in would for audio signals.

no shit its serial but serial ports cannot relay large amounts of audio data..
I say go with midi and stop trying to figure out the other ones. They're probably for keyboard accessories

Well, above where that cable connects into the keyboard it says "computer" and I found a place to plug it on, its an onboard port on my motherboard.
But yes, this is VERY old, and I guess I won't be able to get it to work unless I used MIDI. I guess i'll have to start saving up for a new soundcard
MilkyMedia: I think you about the software issue, this was part of a bundle that was used probably around 9 years ago ...

i dont know if i would call midi data "large amounts of audio data."
so yes you can buy a sound card with a midi-in port, but if youre actually wanting to be serious about this, i would say get a newer midi keyboard and some software like reason. its a little hard to learn if you havent used anything like it before, but once you get the hang of it its pretty simple.

oh yeah you're right - midi data is like almost nothing, but serial ports I don't think have anything to do with it...

and hey that soundcard pic you posted, it has a port on it that looks a lot like serial... perhaps that is the S/PDIF or something that I hear so much about but have no clue what it is?

No, S/PDIF looks just like RCA inputs. I have in/out on my Audigy Platinum eXT box (thanks LDS ).
That is quite the mystery plug...

You don't need a new sound card if you have an open usb port you can get a midiman midisport or a different brand of MIDI interface.

S/PDIF can come as an Optical or RCA input. it is a purely digital signal limited to two channels. if the Optical is S/PDIF ADAT it has eight channels.

yeah well my soundcard has a thing like that too and apparently you plug this thing into it that has two rca-type wires sticking off of IT..
I could be wrong though - I've never messed with it

That serial plug on your keyboard?
It should go right into your soundcard.
Most MIDI interfaces (at least pre-USB) were just an adapter cable that converted a serial plug on one end into 2 din(MIDI) cables. Now you don't have to worry about that!
You can use pretty much any MIDI sequencer to capture the MIDI data. I wouldn't worry too much about how fast the data'll transfer - not only are MIDI signals simply *single* 8-bit words, but I also have a midisport usb 2x2 hooked up to other synths alongside my soundcard's serial port going to my SR-16. No latency between the three instruments.
Oh yeah, I'm from the Nook and I saw this thread from Google so I thought I'd add my .02. :P

Thanks!
I'll see if I can find anything that could let me use this.
EDIT: after reading your post and googling for a list of midi sequencers, I found out that I can use fruity loops to get sound from this thing. This is wonderful!!! thanks man.
